Ok, this may sound a bit stupid, but how do you know, decide which stitch is best for a pattern? I really want to get started but am so confused! : (
Thanks in advance

Depends on how complex your pattern is! I love to use the stem stitch because it works well with curves of patterns for out lines, and for fills as well... just depends on what you're doing... Don't be confused! =) Dive right in with what you feel comfortable with. (Back stitch works well for outlines of patterns as well.)

Hi Saysie!

I agree with Sheena, don't be confused, just dive right in!

But if you need a little help, I would suggest starting with a back stitch or a split stitch. You really can't go wrong with either one of these stitches.

Can't wait to see your stitches!

Thanks so much for your replies! I had a bit of a play last night, and think i am getting the hang of it. Just was getting confused with the outline for the pattern, but i used split stitch and that seemed to work well! Will post some pics soon.
Thanks again

I like split stitch too! It makes a little thicker line!

I have a question about split stitch: do you always do it with even numbers of strands? I've always used chain and stem stitch primarily.

@ Gaylina, I'm a bit of a newbie to embroidery, only started half a year ago or so but I've done the split stitch with 3 and with 4 strands of floss and both worked fine for me! Split stitch is my favourite I guess, but I always sneak in a back stitch for tight corners or small details. I just discovered the stem stitch and I like to use it on straight lines rather than curved ones.

since rediscovering hand embroidery i've realized that I didn't really remember the different types of stitches (i first started doing it when i was 5 or so) but i got this book called 'the embroidery stitch bible" well it describes the stitch and what it's best used for if that's any help to you. you should check it out...
