The Nikkor 50mm f1.8 is probably the best value for money lens you could ever buy......i love mine as it's sharp, great in low light and does a nice job on portraits. You can't go wrong with it.

The f/1.8 is better because it's cheaper; unless you can get a good f/1.4 at EBay.

I agree, the f/1.8 is better for its price. For image and build quality it's another story.

both are ok and it serve its purpose but if you can invest more I suggest getting the 85mm 1.8 which is good when it comes to the word "BOKEH"

Here's a good read from kenrockwell.com:
Your Camera Doesn't Matter: Gianmichele wrote from Italy that he bought a camera. His girlfriend got them a trip to New York so he could take pictures.
While there, she wanted a to take some pictures, too, so she borrowed his camera and here's what she snapped. She didn't know anything about photography, and especially knew nothing about cameras.
Photography is all about the ability to see. Cameras do all the technical stuff so we don't have to. It's not the 1950s anymore. All we need to know is some very basic adjustments and just go shoot.
The shots on her gallery? All made with a mere Nikon D80, and the lens? Not even the kit lens or a zoom: she used a fixed 50mm lens for everything.
I wish I shot this well! Italians have the knack when it comes to art.
Gianmichele asked what I thought about her now wanting to go take photography classes. "Why?" I asked. Does it look look she's missing anything? I can't imagine how her photos could get any better!
For people with vision, photo classes only confuse with rules that no longer apply, and never did. Photo classes were needed in the 1950s, but today, interested people should be taking art, drawing, painting, color and seeing classes instead. The good photographers have degrees in art and painting, not in photography. Ansel Adams studied music, never photography. Jay Maisel has a degree in painting from Yale, not photography.
Some people spend all day in front of a computer trying to make photos happen that never will. Photos happen in the camera. Rules, pixels, MTFs, RAW and HDR have nothing to do with photography. All they do is distract people from ever making any real photos.
I usually make my best shots when I head out with just one lens on my camera. I can concentrate on seeing and not on swapping lenses. Henri Cartier-Bresson used just a 50mm lens for decades and decades. Oh yes - Cartier-Bresson studied at numerous art schools. Louis Daguerre, inventor of the Daguerreotype, was a painter, too.
Have you noticed that the only people telling you to buy a better camera are people trying to sell you one, like camera salesmen, camera companies, magazines and websites that get paid to advertise cameras, or photographers, friends and instructors who are trying to justify their own purchases of too much equipment?
I've never met any genuinely accomplished photographer who told anyone that they needed to buy a better camera. Plenty of photo writers will tell you that, but not accomplished photographers.

guys.....
anyone here knws how to get rid of a dead pixel for a d80? i saw a very tiny red spot on my photos lately on d same exact location. its not a big deal actually coz i can easily remove it on PP. but my old camera use to have a pixel mapping system to remove this so im thinking maybe nikon also has it, i jst havnt figured out how. any tip?

i dont think you can call it a dead pixel because dead pixels can only be found on lcd screens and alike. i think what you have there is a result from sensor dust or better post a sample photo with that red spot.
c peter naay baligya sensor cleaning kit. :D

Sir Ossie: I've read the article you posted from kenrockwell.com.
wow! it's something that encourages me more. I have a very old camera and am still at the stage of saving for something like D80 or higher which I knew will take me years to have that.
thanks for the article. i will be shooting more with my old camera while saving to have a new one :) thanks Sir.

Sir Ossie, thank you for sharing the articles that you have come across with. They can very helpful in taming one's desire for a new lens or a higher end camera. At least it brings one back to the reality that one must learn to make the most of what he has. Its a very sensible explanation as well as an excuse not to spend more (with the wishful thinking that one can afford new stuff)

darklord,
Naay white lens ang nikon. It's the 70-200Vr which you can find only in Japan. You can easily differentiate the nikon and canon since the nikon white lens has also a white hood.

The SB900 can tell if you're using a DX camera, thereby narrowing flash output; and thus saving power - among other things.

That's a decision only you yourself should make. Better read up some more and decide if you really need it.
By the way, Carlito So called up to say that the D700 will be on stock at Watson's next week. Their supplier is from Hong Kong. 140-142K, tops. Either reserve early or wait a while for prices to stabilize.

hi lenpsalm,
At this moment i think there's no point of getting sb800 coz it will be out of production soon not unless you need it badly. Why wait for sb900 believe me its the best flash even better than 580ex II as they say i personally get my hands on it today and wow... im planning to get one but i dont know when coz i still have my sb600 and sb800. hehehe
Just for price updates. this gigs is just released today on local dealers in singapore.
D700 - 3920 sgd (nice viewfinder)
SB900 - 670 sgd (powerful flash, nice controls)
kamo lang compute pila exchange rate. sgd->php

Batteries always discharge slightly when engaged in their compartments; but the power loss is negligible if you use your camera on a daily basis.
