My only issue with cheap tripods is that it is never stable enough. I often find that my old cheap tripods have too much play in the head. When I try to shoot Panoramic or HDR Images, that little jiggle is enough to frustrate me.

Worst case, I had a 60 second shutter for a night shot, and the little bit of wind was enough to cause the camera to move. Even with an 8lbs weight wired to the frame, the head still the weak point.

I'm saving up for a nice tripod for later this summer, then a new head. My simple motto for camera equipment from now on will be... "Quality, you need to buy it once"

National Camera and West Photo sell used tripods. My Bogen 3221 came from there for less than $100.
