Is it worh it?

I am thinking about doing teacher training in the UK. I know it is very stressful and yet rewarding. My question is- do you think the stress and paperwork, lesson plans etc is worth it? Thanks. Marie xxx

I was thinking more about long term effects and how teaching is after several years. I do enjoy what I have done so far but after meeting several teachers who were teaching for over thirty years each It made me question things. I imagine it is about how dedicated and passionate you are and hopefully the rest falls away.

It's a good question. I wonder though, if you asked anybody who has been doing the same thing for thirty years if they enjoy it as much as they did when they first got started, how those people would respond. I'm sure you could find many that love what they do, have learned more than they thought possible through the years, and have no desire to do anything else. I am equally sure that you could find people that stick around for the retirement checks, are jaded by paperwork, jumping through hoops etc., and are looking forward to life after work.
I love teaching. It is something that I feel fulfilled with and I look forward to doing nearly everyday. There are certainly stresses and times when you will question if it is what you want to do. There are also moments that take your breath away, letting you know that you have made a difference in the world.
Good luck with your decision. I'm glad I made mine.

I wonder at the idea of doing one thing for 30 years. Even if you stay in teaching you might find yourself becoming a subject leader, a deputy or a head teacher. You could become an LEA advisor, and OFSTED inspector. You could find your inclinations give you the 'perfect' educational business idea and find yourself a niche. You could decide after training that classroom teaching is not for you. But - none of that learning would be wasted. Learning never is, it all helps to move us on and to find our way.

My short answer is, "Yes." Try volunteering for a while to get to know the job enough to be able to answer it yourself.
