Day trip to coast from London
 |
Hello all
I really need to visit more of our great coastal scenery but Im stuck in London without a car. Can anyone suggest a location that can be reached by train from London and is accessible by foot once there?
Im guessing Norfolk and the South Coast are close. Im also tempted to stay overnight to catch the sunrise as well.
Any suggestions would be really helpful. I just bought Digital SLR Photography mag and it has a UK Landscape gallery section thats making me itch to get out there!
Thanks

I appreciate it is a long way from London, but never ignore the coast and mountains around Snowdonia. Train to Bangor will get you just 20 minutes from some of the best landscape to be had anywhere.
As well as that there is the coastal strip of the Menai Straits all around Bangor. If it's a mix of landscape, together with architecture and history you are after, look no further.

you can get a train to sheringham in north norfolk, just change in norwich. from sheringham i would reccomend getting a coastliner bus heading westwards. as soon as you hit kelling and salthouse the coast starts getting spectacular. ..throught cley, blakeney, morston, etc etc. towrds brancaster. there is a very cheap and reasonable hostel you can stay in in burnham deepdale. wells also has a youth hostel and plenty of b and b's. wells is a lovely place to stay. it has a working harbour, good pubs and fish and chips, and an amazing beach with a string of 300 beach huts on a golden beach backed by pinewoods. if you are sneaky you can book a beach hut and stay the night in there as the keys are not due back till 8 the next morning. the only trouble is that you will want to stay from more than one night...

Thanks for responses.
Alan - If I end up in Snowdonia it will be for mountain climbing as Ive done some mountaineering in Fort William. With all the climbing equipment a point and shoot is only really viable.
pengelly - Norfolk is looking good. It seems Norwich and Lowestoft are the gateways to where I want to end up!

a couple of other options though its worth checking schedules as may have reduced timetables out of peak season -
- take the train to Brockenhurst in the New Forest and hire a bike from one of the many bike hire vendors. Need only cycle a few easy miles and will be in beautiful woodland and open tracks. Keep a look out for "wild" roaming cattle, ponies deer and pigs....
- take the train to Bournemouth, walk through the town and Gardens to beach, then sync up with the motor cruiser ferry to Swanage and take a steam train to Corfe Castle. Can take a bus (or two) back via the Studland car ferry - again a lot of photo opportunities. Stay overnight and you have Compton Acres and a host of other nearby photogenic attractions.
