i stumbled upon this group today, and i love it. i was speaking to a friend of mine about inspirationfor photos, and i think this is a great one! i live near new york city, which is a gold mine for fragments.

Hi all Urban Fragmenters my name is Mark. I live in South Wales (UK) near Cardiff and a contact of mine recommended that I check out your group. So I did and was impressed with what I saw so I joined the group instantly followed up by sending a couple of my own captures. I have a konica minolta maxxum and I love it, just love using different kinds of film and getting to know what to use when. Anyway, I look forward to seeing everyone's pics and being in the group.

Hello--another newbie. I live in Monterey, California. Lately I've been mining and posting old photos (slides), but that has spurred me on to dusting off my cameras and getting back into photographing after a rather long hiatus. Monterey isn't big-city urban, but there is still plenty of subject matter here--and if I want big-city urban, I can always head to San Francisco for a little inspiration. hello.
My name is nazila. I did urban history/preservation planning and landscape architecture in an earlier life. I still attend meeings of preservationists and vernacular scholars, so I am always looking for urban and rural fragments. I live in Seattle, but I travel alot to paris, rome and throughout the US, so I am always looking for interesting things and places to photograph.
I mostly use a d50 with assorted lenses, but just bought a canonsd800IS and am playing with it these days.
I am more likely to take a fragment picture than a landscape, so this is a great group for me.

Hello - Inky from Modesto/Stockton California, though I was born and raised in Chicago and travel that way every once in a while. I've been taking photos on and off for some 25 years now. Though I don't really consider myself anything more than an amateur photographer because I mostly use the camera for relaxation, I technically have that "semi-pro" status. I take photos for work as well as for fun and get photos published occasionally in newspapers, magazines and books (mostly because my bosses get desperate for a specific image and use mine as a last resort due to lack of better photos - HA!).

Hi everyone! My name is Bob and I live in southern Maine. Always had a fascination for old forgotten things - objects, buildings, whatever - so urban fragments is a great fit for me. Recently I have been reversing my tracks and shooting film with older cameras rather than shooting digital. This has been in part because I haven't the budget for a high-end digital, and I was getting fed up with poor quality from low-end digitals - over sharpening, excess noise, and jpeg compression artifacts. They put some great glass on some simple cameras back in the 60's and 70's. If I get a 'once in a lifetime' great shot on film, I could go so far as to get a drum scan... if I got that same great shot on my 7MP A620, I'm stuck with it at that size and quality.

Thank God for Justin.hawthorne. I was all set to lambast Portland for not having a single response to the thread, so he was just in time. (Okay, I apologize for that.)
And a note to those people who describe themselves as "aspiring photographers" or "aspiring writers." Buck up. If you have a camera, you're a photographer. If you write, you're a writer. Now, you may aspire to be lauded or to be make money off your art, and that's an entirely different bucket of bolts.
I take pictures to record information. I mostly take pictures of cemeteries. I mostly take pictures of cemeteries in Oregon. To date I've taken pictures in some 425 Oregon cemeteries; and I'm slowly putting up some shots from each cemetery onto Flickr and locating them on their map, should one be interested in finding them. I take pictures so I don't have to write down epitaphs. I take pictures to record the "personalization" of tombstones and gravesites. I take pictures to remember what the cemetery looks like. And sometimes, when driving over this glorious state, I take pictures of other things because, like Everest, they're there.
The bottom line is, you take 10,000 pictures, a few of them are bound to be, if not good, then at least not bad. Hopefully, a few of the good ones will find thir way here, but the company is rarified, indeed. A lot of the good photos I've found to send on to the group are actually taken by my wife, who takes far fewer photos than I do, but who takes a much larger percentage of good photos than I do. Think that doesn't make me grumpy? You bet.

I keep my name and identity under wraps, since most of my photos involve my child. As a former journalist, I am very familiar with how easy it can be to track somebody with limited info - so I take small measures to maintain anonminity and reduce that risk.
I don't have any photos that fit this category yet, but I hope to change that. I love old buildings and architecture - and happened upon this group while browsing for inspiration. I'd like to branch out and improve my photo skills - and it seems the best way to do that may simply be by taking lots of photos of a variety of subjects.
Kodamakitty is so right - I'd never be able to play around if it weren't for digital!
