Is everyone else here as disappointed as I am that Flickr is set to become a cheap Yahoo version of Youtube?

I'm kind of with you. The on-line video-sharing realm has been conquered with youtube. I don't think flickr should try to be something it isnt...bad.

Well, from what few videos I've seen, the video quality looks better than YouTube, but I highly doubt Flickr is "trying" to be anything like YouTube.

Making high quality photos has a much closer spirit to making high quality video than it does to taking a quick snap of your cat.

Of course, we might just end up with a load of cat videos...

Then Youtube should start sharing photos and see how that works out. Personally, I like Flickr the way it is, but I guess life's boring w/o change.

Also remember....lottsa people on Flickr have cams that also take videos.

Given that the video clips are limited to 90 seconds, I don't think we'll be getting the same type of video that YouTube attracts - It might be OK as long as we don't get flooded with clips that don't show anything that couldn't be captured in a photograph, but sometimes the sounds can contribute a lot to the feel . . . .

I have an account on a video site called LiveLeak. Most of the stuff there is complete garbage. The class of user is much lower than on Flickr (or any other photo site for that matter.) I joined Flickr as an alternative to that sort of thing. And frankly, the funny cat videos are about the best thing on those sites. And doesn't Yahoo already have a video site? I think they are just trying to capitalize on the good reputation that we, the users of Flickr, have created. I will be dropping any groups that mix video with the photography unless I can filter it out completely.

It's only been a day. Why not wait and see if the videos are any good before you burst a blood vessel? Or just don't click on thumbnails with the little play button, it's that easy to screen them out.

So far most of the videos I've seen are fairly good, especially considering that a lot of people seem to be testing the feature out right now with whatever they have on their computer. That doesn't surprise me, since there are a lot of good photographers here who would also make good movies, and for now video is a pro account feature. The main problem I have is people spamming that no videos protest group all over the place.

I think the problem with youtube is the user base, not the video. Vimeo for example has better quality, better users and better movies.

Anything that is over saturated by non-sense, with youtube, myspace like entertainment is Bull Shit (Period). It's all based on corporate infrastructure greed and the capitalistic mind set that goes with the territory. It's all money driven. I'm almost done with this internet BS anyways. This is just pushing me away. I'll wait and see what our voice can say so.

i don't know how i feel about this just yet...i’m torn cuz i have my sneaking suspicions that seedy videos will start making their way into flickr, and it will become a playground for pornography....and flickr will become cesspool of smut

but it wouldn't be so bad, if the videos were more like long photographs...such as this one I saw….

flickr.com/photos/anjouwu/2402666173/in/pool-60_second_ci...

it was visually appealing and tastefully done...but it will be difficult to monitor the content, and that's when the racey materical will start making it's way in....

at any rate, i don't think the videos should be mixed in with the photos..that's confusing..they should be hosted by a sister site or something...

*no video on flickr*.

yes, video is a ligitimate art form, and has a ligitimate place on the artistic landscape. but i don't think that's here on flickr.

but i don't run the site. the suits at yahoo do. if video kills this "radio" star, the suits will be to blame.

cornelius crab  Pro User  says:

Flickr's already a playground for porn, judging by some of the groups with "only members can see the pool" that turn up in searches. If you didn't realize that then that shows how easy it is to restrict your viewing to what you want to see. Video won't change that.

If redmann wants to make this a photo only that's great, I don't think video suits every theme. But to say things like "it'll bring chaos to flickr" before anything even happens is just paranoid. Video didn't turn vimeo.com into Youtube, and the only chaos I've seen so far is a flood of spam and a bit of harassment from some of the anti-video crowd.

Kevin Steele  Pro User  says:

Much video on Flickr will end up uniquely Flickr-like. This is not about suits at Yahoo or YouTube.

Flickr has challenged us to explore the middle ground between pictures and video, to explore the boundaries of what a picture is.

The contemplative single shot scenes that people are posting are an example of this grey area. On a standard video site where people try to simulate TV experiences these posts would seem incomplete, but here on Flickr people will look at them in the spirit they were made.

edrodgers731  Pro User  says:

Photography is older than Flickr. It has been separate from Video a long time before Flickr. I don't make movies. I make photographs. I like to communicate with other people that make photographs.

So for me, I'd rather conserve the previously snappy Flickr experience and not suck up bandwidth with video. I'm sorry, but I've already noticed a slowdown.

What's next? Flash based games on Flickr?

Have you ever been to a video art gallery?

Get outta my yard you damn kids!

John Gusky  Pro User  says:

hahaha! right on, ed!

hey kevin, i'm not saying this is "about" the yahoo suits. I said the suits made the decision. and i agree that video challenges us in ways that photography cannot. as a 25 yr vetern videographer - or TV news photographer - as we say in the biz, i think i know this more than most people. i just think video belongs elsewhere...not on flickr. peace out.

cornelius crab  Pro User  says:

: Exactly. I don't post my video clips to Youtube because the video quality is terrible, it has no community I want to be part of and I have to turn off comments. I don't post the short clips to Vimeo because that's for people with HD video cameras and editing software and I don't feel like they belong there. I'm not posting them in Ed's yard, I'm posting them in my own stream and in video groups, and anyway I was here first. I've been making them for 5 years with the same damn cameras that I use for some of my still photos, so I think the separation is arbitrary and silly.

Bandwidth... well Ed does have a good point there. I hope they thought this out properly. I expect that the novelty will wear off in a few days... I hope it doesn't drive up the price of pro accounts though on the other hand i was going to let the pro account lapse before this video thing happened.

"Have you ever been to a video art gallery?"
I've been to lots and lots of multimedia art shows. Saw a good show of Man Ray's movies and photos a few years ago, I think I liked the movies better because the photos included a lot of his commercial work which was OK but not inspiring.

Yes, they are banned here. But luckily admin's can specify whether they are allowed or not without posting group rules.

My two cents about video on flicktr in general? I kind of like them. Serves a different purpose than video on YouTube. I think a month from now there won't be so much of an uproar about it. But, that's just me.

any.g  Pro User  says:

Flickr+video will not become YouTube just like Flickr never became Fotolog. Furthermore, there already are thousands of Flickr users that post only silly family/travel/pet photos, and you can simply choose not to follow their photostream. They will post silly videos of their families/travels/pets, just like the creative, open-minded, artistic users will post good, surprising, quality videos.

It's not about having our territory invaded, it's about trusting the quality of the community. Which I do, and welcome the addition.
