About Wildflower Field Guide, North America

A group to create an online wildflower field guide of flowering plants native (or naturalized) to the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Please note: There are a lot of rules to this group, so please consider carefully whether you want to contribute. We will remove non-compliant photos because we have a specific mission, not because we don't like your photo (and not just to be mean).

Wildflower, North America - Selector

This is a tag-heavy group - if you're not interested in tagging every photo COMPLETELY, please don't add them to the group and cause work for others who volunteer to tag or delete.

Each flower posted must have the following tags:
___* wfgna – this is a literal to signify the group
___* Common Name – Of course each species has many local and common names. Please include at least the one you know it by.
___* Binomial Name - Genus species
___* Genus Name separately
___* flower color(s) – Primary color and any variations from this list: purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, brown, red, pink or white. When questionable or in doubt, add all applicable colors.
___* flower shape(s) – Primary shape of the flower from the following list: 2petals, 3petals, 4petals, 5petals, 6petals, manypetals, longcluster, roundcluster or oddshaped

Additionally, it will be helpful in the future to also tag:
___* Family Name - the taxonomic family (usually ending in "aceae.")
___* State or Province - Where the flowers was located, such as "North Carolina" or "Northwest Territories" be sure to put multiple word places in quotes.
___* GeoTags - Latitude and Longitude information, see Geotagging.

Please do not post a flower photo to the group pool and then ask that it be identified. Identify it the best you can with appropriate taggings and the group will most probably be self-correcting.

For help identifying plants/flowers try Wildflowers, or the flickr group ID Please. If you've already got a name and want to verify, USDA Plants database. Also, if you're not sure the plant is appropriate for this group our ID thread may be the place to go.

This group encourages posting a large number of photos of different species at one time (as long as they meet the tagging criteria) - there are no posting limits here! But we're trying to amass a rich variety, so please don't post more than one photo per individual plant unless there is a specific identification character you need to point out. Just pick your best ones to share and post away!

This is a group set up for wildflower identification. This is not a group for garden plants or houseplants, or for fruit, seed, or leaf shots. Admin(s) will be strident in the pruning of photos that don't fit the criteria. Thanks for understanding.
