If by "folder" you mean a set, then it's easy
Go to the set page
In the upper right corner click the Share This link
Type in the address, or addresses.
Click the level of private photos you want the family to see.
Click Send

Open the set (folder). Click the Share This link on the upper right of the page, under the Search box. Enter the email addresses and send it -- this creates a Guest Pass, and the recipient will be able to see the photos.

If you are trying to Grab This Link to get the URL, you *must* click the Get The New Link button after you set the privacy access, to generate a link that actually gives access to your private images.

Thanks for the info. This is exactly what I want. BUT, when I add the e-mail it says, "opps that doesn't look like a real e-mail address" . But it is. I've tried various e-mail accounts. Anybody run into this problem?
thanks

I haven't seen that problem yet. Are you certain you have no leading spaces and that the format of the email address is xxxx@domain.com (or edu or net, etc).

are you typing it in or cut/paste?
Sometimes there are extra spaces in email addresses when you copy them.

I been going back and forward with some "Maria" bot on this topic with no solution whatsoever. All of my pictures are marked with the highest "security" level - (I forget Flickr's scheme) AND viewable by "friends & family" only.
However, when I invite friends, (some are members; some are not and don't want to be), and I tried inviting with both a direct Flickr emailing to each friend and also the URL copy/paste approach, only other Flickr members have access. My non-Flickr member friends can't get in to see my pics with my invite!
Further, I don't want any other Flickr member to have viewing access unless I directly invite them.
I thought this was a simple, common situation but the Maria-Bot at FLickr is clueless! Does anyone understand what my question is!!??
Does anyone have a solution since Flickr is clueless!

By "highest security level" I'm going to assume you mean "most restrictive safety level.
You set images based on how "safe" they are: safe, moderate (slightly sexy or artsy nudes), or restricted (sexual content).
Pictures are required to be correctly flagged (Flickr's term for these safety settings) whether they are public or private. Restricted pictures can be public if they are correctly flagged.
If a picture is flagged restricted, it can only be viewed by signed-in Flickr members who are over 18. You cannot send Guest Passes for restricted images.
The public/private-friends/private-family/private-me only setting has nothing to do with it, except for your own comfort level.
It sounds like you need to set your images to private-friends or private-family and then add the correct safety level for each picture: safe, moderate, or restricted.
Setting pictures that should be 'restricted' to either 'safe' or 'moderate' can get your account deleted. It doesn't matter if they are private, they must be flagged correctly.

Ok Thanks. Yes, my pictures are ALL marked as restricted, period, and some of them should be.
AND they are also marked as "Friends & family only" so no viewing by other Flickr members which I guess really burns Flickr's ass which is why they're being soooooooooo difficult and not answering me just as you did. Maria-bot keeps saying change the security level which of course will backfire which Maria-Bot is clueless to.
I wanted to allow "F&F" only access to my restricted pictures and you're saying it can't be done.
Thanks for the answer.

Thanks this is helpful to me too. Iwas having an AWFUL time sharing photos. I think it's because i had defaulted everthing to 'restircted' but all of the pics were very tame G rated things. So I reset the setting and now I think i can share them..which is all i wanted!

Steve, I have the same problem since two weeks !
I am photographer and using flickr to show my clients their photos I made, but of course in a private session. Until two weeks ago it worked perfect. But now... with "grab the link" people don't get access to the flikr set, with "sharing or inviting some one", they need to subscribe to yahoo and this is not the aim.
at the moment I make sessions public, but can't go on like this...
So if you find the solution to send a link, which permit "strangers" to see a set, I'd be very happy to read it.

RANT---
I finally found one of these open so I don't start a new one. I am the paying customer here why can't guest passes work the way users expect them to; click a button get a link or set an email address and send the link, regardless of how pictures are marked or who I 'm sending to. They are my pictures and I am choosing who to send access to them to.
PROBLEM --
ok YAHOO photos closed I had to choose where I wanted to use for online picture storage I chose and paid for Flickr. Note I am not interested in a photo sharing blogging or streaming site so I want my stuff private and in order to make sure, settings are set to restricted and private by default. Now I want to sell a car I have photos of and can't share the pictures even after changing (batch) the set to safe. If I make them public the world can see them but I want control...

Ok I finally found a magic combination that worked
Change all picture to friends
Mark all safe

create link
select friends family and private
re-create link (create new link or something)
