Can Flickr feature Sichuan earthquake pictures on Homepage?
|
Dear Flickr staff,
As we know, on this Monday (May 12th), there was a giant earthquake in Sichuan, China (Richter scale 7.8). More than 10,000 people are killed, more than 100,000 people are wounded, hundreds of thousands of people become homeless, and many of them are children and school students. They really need help.
One of my flickr contact is collecting nice and latest photos of this earthquake, here are the sets: www.flickr.com/photos/26599733@N04/
And we think it is better to let more people know about it, to make more donations to help people who really need it. Can Flickr staff do us a favor to feature one picture from the above link to the Flickr official homepage, please? Much appreciated!
Please allow me paste the link to the donation site here (Mercy Corp, one reliable non-profit organization): www.mercycorps.org/chinaearthquake/
Thanks for reading and thanks for donations. You are making difference. Your donation is tax-deducible.
Regards,
phunter

At the risk of being shot down in flames, i hope Flickr doesnt do this. I hope they continue to choose the front page as they normally do. (however that is)
Yes the situation in China seems particularly difficult, but there are a number of disasters the worldover, and happen throughout the year. )yes not often as bad as this)
But i want Flickr to remain about photos from around the world, and not to focus on one particular event.
im sure there are a number of groups here on Flickr re China and the situation there, but i dont want it to take over Flickr.
I wouldnt be suprised if flickr add photos to the blog, cos i expect there are some spectacular photos from and of the quake. And if they choose a photo for the front page because its a great/interesting photo then cool. But not just because its a disaster that needs help.
hope my view comes across ok.
EDIT
and also your link takes me to a photostream of someone who seems to be colleting images that are not theirs and posting them here. While i really like the shots, if they dont belong to the uploader then its against Flickrs rules and ToS.

Thank you for comments, austenhaines, actually, if flickr can not do it, thanks anyway, we understand it must be difficulty for flickr, but if possible please focus on this event for a while, since I think Flickr is not just a photo storage server, but a community, we have nice people/users here who are willing to help others.

Im sure Flickr staff will read this, and im sure they will of course at least consider it. And of course you are absolutely right, Flickr is a community, one in which i have made a number of new and very good friends.

Linking to a photostream full of pictures your contact didn't take themselves is probably not a great way to thank them for their efforts.

Yes, thanks austenhaines and Wooble, the copyright is a weak point. Let me think of it and find a better way.

Not to put too fine a point on it, China actively blocks Flickr - how will they react to this? Will they allow aid to reach their people, or take the same attitude as Myanmar?

Flickr is NOT blocked in China. I have a business partner who relies on Flickr daily.
Youtube is blocked.

saimneor Odd, there is an entire thread here devoted to people using Flickr in China who are blocked. That is why Hamed's Access Flickr script is so useful to them.

Dr. Keats:
not to overstate the obvious, but China is not Myanmar.
coverage of the recent quakes has been wall-to-wall in china, vastly different from the tangshan quake in 1976.
they are also actively accepting large amounts of aid and assistance from abroad, including taiwan.
