Road (222/365)
I survived what felt like an endless drive today & the sun even came out! Then I found out that a dear friend, Baba Liz, passed away last week. I met Liz in the Peace Corps. She was the oldest and I was the youngest in our Peace Corps Macedonia Group III in 1998. We hit it off right away and became fast friends. She was a trailblazer teacher involved in racially integrating the schools. She always wanted to be in the Peace Corps so at around age 70, she did just that. What a brave woman she was to leave her husband at home for hard work as a PCV in Skopje just when many people are slowing down to enjoy their golden years. Since she was in the capital, she had frequent visitors as the volunteers came in and out of the city, and she loved it. There were often so many of us visiting at one time that we were sleeping body to body on the floor. When we were evacuated in 1999 due to the war in Kosovo, Liz settled back in at home in VA and bought a sporty red car to tool around in... I was lucky to visit frequently while in DC. When she moved to GA, I didn't see her anymore but we stayed in touch. Looking back, it was definitely not frequent enough. I am also going to finally get around to scanning my Peace Corps photos so I can put together a fitting memory book of dear Baba Liz. Friends of Macedonia will also sponsor a project in her honor. Rest In Peace Liz... you are missed. Thank you for showing me the road less traveled - I strive to follow your lead.
FRANK SINATRA - "The Lonesome Road"
Look down, look down that lonesome road
Before you travel on
Look up, look up and seek your maker
Before Gabriel blows his horn
Weary totin' such a load
Trudgin' down the lonesome road
Look down, look down that lonesome road
Before, before you travel on
True love, true love, what have I done
That you should treat me so?
You caused me to walk and talk
Like I never did before
Weary totin' such a load
Trudgin' down that lonesome road
Look down, look down that lonesome road
Before you travel on
Look down, look down that lonesome road
Before you travel on
Look up, look up and seek your maker
Before Mr. Gabriel blows his horn
I'm weary of totin' such a heavy load
Trudgin' down that lonesome road
Look down, look down that lonesome road
Before, before you travel on
Look down, look down that lonesome road
Before you travel on
Look down, look down that lonesome road
Before you decide to travel on
Look down, look down, look down, look down that lonesome road
Before you travel on
