Wine Diamonds

I opened a bottle of a 1999 vintage Yalumba, Mawsons, Limestone Coast, Cabernet Sauvignon / Shiraz / Merlot and found these wine diamonds on the cork.

These are tartaric acid (calcium tartrate) crystals which precipitate out of the solution over time and grow as these tiny crystals. It is an indicator that grapes were given extra hang time on the vine for maximum sweetness and acids, and that the winemaker crafted the wine slowly and carefully.

These cause no harm to the wine (or you). And yes, the drop was nice. We had the second (and last) bottle the next night. It also has wine diamonds.

Wish I had a macro lens to do justice to the sparkles on the cork ....
