Amsterdam is cycling heaven. Everything is flat, except the little bridges that take you over the canals. Bikes have the right of way over pedestrians and cars. People drive like maniacs, and you'd be well advised to get into the habit of looking out for purpose-driven two-wheelers! You see all sorts of bikes; back and front seats, huge baskets, small side bags, the wheelbarrow in front, you name it. Stolen bikes is apparently a rampant national virus, which explains why the ones you see in the city are really old and cruddy-looking; everyone gets their ferrari out on the weekends! This shot was taken by the main train station in Amsterdam. There are bike rentals available at the station or close to it. You can rent a bike per half day or 24 hours, and "do" Amsterdam by yourself, or go with a group.

I loved cycling in Holland. A friend and
myself went round the whole country after
leaving school. I just loved the separate
roads and traffic lights. The highlight was
when my chain fell off. A policeman peddled
up, fixed my bike, saluted us and peddled off
again. The thought of a policeman doing that
in this country is beyond imagination.

Thanks for visiting, madswisscow! And thanks
for sharing, gms! I don't know what a swiss
cop would do. I can't imagine one on a bike
in my area!

I'd like to do that in Amsterdam. It seems
cycling is one of the must-do-things when you
are there.
@gms, What an experience!

I have Ariel -- just over six years ago in a
school trip -- but didn't cycle then.
