This photo, especially when viewed on black,
is truly amazing. The Yahoo aerial map link
is amazing too!! I have never been to Burning
Man, and seeing the size of the congregation
from the aerial view blew me away.

wonderful! i think i'll have to go there ^^
what is flickr's sharpening?

jayavant - when flickr reduces the size of photos for
display on this page (and all other sizes) it
drastically reduces the quality of the photo
(to minimize file size for downloading) and
applies a high sharpening filter (which can
be see here way too much - look at the
contours / outlines around the figures in the
photo). If you look at the original (the
link called "see it right" that I
added above) you'll see that that outline
doesn't exist.
Most of the time this isn't much of a
problem, it's just in cases like this where
there's a strongly contrasted silhouette.

Did you do something special to achieve that
unusual halo effect around the sun?

VultureSG - nope, that's how it was in all the shots I
took around this time (with the sun very
low). Some possible factors? Maybe the dusty
haze that exists near the ground in this
desert, some lens flaring (most likely), or
camera sensor effects / "errors"
due to direct sunlight hitting it...
I have had other types of similar rings
around the sun occur in totally different
places / times and using other lenses with
the sun low at the horizon.

That's some original holiday destination!
Love that guy's pose; looks like he's guiding
the sun in to land.
I find halos around the sun very annoying.

a very basic idea for a picture and one that
is done a lot, but I do like it, I like the
fact that the people are not in black but in
shades of colour

the line created by the three main figures is
spectacular. extra kudos for NOT having the
guy with his hands up 'holding' the sun :)
i have got to get to burning man next
year... hmmm maybe a popolo tent?

On the basis that it will give me some hope
if a sunset makes it into popolo and the not
insignificant fact that I love the
composition with so much animation in it,
this has to be a popolo for me. :)

I'd have popolod it for sure. The description
of ...people warshiping in the desert is perhaps not so unlikely
given the event. I'm picturing the scene
right now. Madness. Love to get there one
day. It's reassuring that I'll never be to
old for this sort of thing.
