The Bhaktapur Kumari

In Nepal, there are a small number of girls revered as living goddesses, or Kumaris. They are selected as toddlers and retain their status as goddesses until they reach puberty. I was fortunate to meet one of them - Sajani Shakya, the Kumari of Bhaktapur. She visited Silver Spring, MD to see the world premiere of a documentary about Kumaris at the Silverdocs festival. It's the first time a Kumari has ever visited the United States. More about her visit, and a short video, are available on my blog.
