really, writing the names of national franchise restaurants in chinese underneath does not make those two blocks a Chinatown.

is this really what DC Chinatown is like??

Fran...

dippingmytoes - actually even London's
Chinatown struck me as a little
studio-fabricated.. its not just red lanterns
that you need. it's meat and fish shops (and
their accompanying smells), it's
hole-in-the-wall restaurants with amazing
food, its loads of Chinese ppl. London's was
really more of a pretty'd-up version. but it
DID have good food so that's a plus =) and,
well, it IS pretty!

barsaat, I see your point... truth is,
nothing can compare or replace the real
thing! I go to Chinatown often and believe
me, the smells are there! lol Although
London's chinatown does look a little
contrived and certainly does cater for a
tourist market, the wonderful thing is it's
run wholly by the Chinese community who have
had a presence in that part of London ever
since they emigrated here :) The restaurants
are authentic (you can catch many Chinese
people, including families dining there), New
World on Gerrard's place is one such
restaurant :) There are several very busy
grocery shops in the area which, although
they don't look great, do supply a huge array
of authentic food produce, including fresh
fish and oriental fruits and veg :) And
you're completely and utterly right, it takes
a lot more than a few Chinese lanterns to
make a Chinatown but I still like London's
one... Just wish it was bigger! There used to
be a fantastic place that sold beautiful
Chinese ceramics, including everyday
kitchenware, I bought a great Dinnerset from
there but alas... it closed down to make way
for a shopping centre which really has spoilt
that part of Chinatown a bit :(

I enjoyed NY's Chinatown :) Toronto has a few
pockets of Chinese communities also, there's
a few huge shopping malls in Markham TO.
Pacific Mall was fun :P

Dippingmytoes - youre right in many ways, and
truthfully i only spent one evening in
london's chinatown. but the fact that the
restaurant we happened to wander into had
good food and asian clientele means that
there is SOME authenticity (at the very
least) there. perhaps if it was bigger it
would be more like other cities'.

that's horrible! tsk tsk. but very common,
even here.
I haven't been to TO's chinatown! just NY
DC and London's.

lol that was the point - it was just regulr
stores, with their names written in chinese
underneath!!

in case there was any doubt, allow me to
corroborate...yup, DC's chinatown sucks. (it
doesn't even *smell* like chinatown.)
and, if you think the chipotle's bad, you
should see the hooters, and the irish bar
with chinese on the signs.

the up-side, though, is that the suburbs are
positively teeming with good asian stores and
markets if you know where to go (and have the
means to get out that way)!

now that you mention it, perhaps thts why i
was so disappointed - b/c i knew there's a
good-sized asian pop there and so i was
expecting something more, um, asian.
