This is in Shockoe Bottom, the part of
Richmond that was flooded in 2004 by
Hurricane Gaston. The whole neighborhood is
basically on a flood plain. There are a lot
of bars in this area, but since the
construction of the flood wall, a lot of the
old warehouses have been or are being
converted into apartments and condos.
Shockoe comes from the Native American
Indian word shacquohocan, which as I
understand referred to the large flat rocks
that lay at the mouth of the creek that fed
into the James River near here.
