C-MONSTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
COR BLESS YOU!!!!!! Finally, the truth is
out there.
And let me add one more point. The proper
wrapping of a burrito is a thing of beauty.
It DOESN'T unravel as you it it, and it
DOESN'T need aluminium foil to stop it from
disembowling itself all over your hand.
AAhhhh I feel a huge weight has been lifted

On behalf of the folks at burritophile, feel free to come over to our house and
rant away. I personally disagree with you on
rice (hey, I'm NorCal) and the black beans
(usually fantastic in a veggie burrito, which
can get a bit soupy with the refrieds), and
whole slices of avocado in the middle as
opposed to guac on the side...
So yeah, I guess we only agree on the
suckitude of "burritos" in NYC.
Good rant!

Yes, only someone from NorCal would think
that rice belongs in a burrito. ;-P
C-monster, you've got the rant down pat.
(I'm going home in two weeks and plan to get
an entire year's worth of Mexican food in
over the span of 10 days - screw turkey, I'm
having a burrito for Thanksgiving.)
Just to reiterate: rice NEVER belongs in a
burrito.

Hell Yeah! Amen!
Here's hoping that folks in Boston get the
idea as well, you can't get a decent burrito
here either. And don't talk to me about
Anna's either, it just ain't right. At least
the judiciary here in Massachusetts is
starting to get a clue.
Although I will say that burritos, at least
as I found them in Albuquerque, didn't need
to have beans in them, a little place called
Los Betos made a great chicken burrito, with
just chicken.

I go to Sunset Park almost every day looking
for a good burrito. It's so sad. How I long
for the days when I could walk around the
corner for a $3 burrito and pickled carrots.
A slice of pizza pales in comparison.
However, not all burritos need beans. I
wouldn't want beans in a carne asada burrito,
which I like with nothing but guacamole and
pico de gallo inside.
BTW, I second the diet coke comment.
Where's your horchata? At least you use
Tapatio.

agreed... the diet coke is kinda sorry! (i
shoulda moved it out of the frame.) usually
i have my burrito with a jarritos de

beer...but someone had given me this diet
coke, and it was free, so i drank it...

a burrito need not have beans. and thank
god, because they're tasty but they give some
of us gringos gas.
the barbecued meat/pico/guac burrito (beef
= carne asada, chicken = pollo asado, pork =
carnitas) is nature's perfect food.
and as diet coke is nature's perfect drink,
it absolutely belongs in the pic.

Ok, Chicago boy chiming in, now in LA. Agree
completely about the rice. NO RICE. But have
to disagree about lettuce, sliced avacado,
cheese, and salsa. All must be present. If
you went to school anywhere around the
midwest, you know La Bamba rules. Must be
served with RC Cola and pickled carrot
jalepeno mix at 4 AM when the bars close.

"Yes, only someone from NorCal would
think that rice belongs in a burrito."
and he's so right. because norcal (san
francisco specifically) has the best burritos
you can find anywhere. nowhere else (save
mexico, of course) can even come close.

Ok, I just have to share this fascinating
article I came across a while ago: Wikipedia on Mission-style burritos.
Seriously, there's a section in that
article entitled, "Culture and politics
of the San Francisco Burrito".
I think that much like barbecue, there is
room for distinct regional variations in
burritos. (Except in NYC.) In San
Francisco, of COURSE burritos have rice in
them. And are wrapped in foil for easy
peel-and-eating. But I can see that a
non-rice, non-foil burrito might be easier to
eat one-handed, however. I'll have to try
one next time I'm down that way.

Re: Rice.
Burritos were first sold in San Francisco
(source: www.burritophile.com/articles/cylindrical_god

Fragrant, flavorful, yellow rice. Yum.

san francisco?
per your link on burritophile:
"The gigantic flour tortilla proved
ideal as a leakproof wrapper—a veritable
suitcase—for hungry Sonoran miners to carry
their rice and beans to the mineral finds in
the Southern California desert, then north
with the rest of the '49ers. From the dross
of cornless cookery, the burrito emerged like
a nugget of gold."
okay, i'll give you traction on the fact
that some burritos have rice in them. but to
say that the burrito was first sold in s.f.
sounds like a stretch...i'm sure that the
first lady to open up her burrito cart
somewhere in sonora is rolling in her
grave...
and alas, while i do love yellow or red
rice, most places in the u.s. use parboiled
rice (like Uncle Ben's), not regular
long-grain. this is a travesty. par-boiled
rice is flavorless and makes my long-deceased
latin american ancestors moan in agony...

no, you'll never find uncle ben's style
parboiled rice in san francisco. always light
and flavorful yellow or red rice. i've eaten
burrito's far and wide, including tasty
adolfo's (i grew up near laguna), and only a
sf mission style super burrito can truly
bring my belly happiness. plus, the things
are so big that $5 can afford you two meals.
eat the other half for breakfast.
but yes, we can all agree that nyc has yet
to offer a good burrito. it's laughable when
certain establishments offer a
"california style" or "mission
style" burrito. you can get great, cheap
tacos in sunset park though.

The first San Francisco-style burrito was in
San Francisco; the first burrito of any kind
was most likely made in Sonora. There's a
small-but-decent book on the subject, and a very good essay over
at NPR.
That is, if you're an obsessive burrito
geek. Like me. The only time I've ever liked
a whole-wheat tortilla is actually in a
breakfast burrito, which adds a weird
toastlike quality to the
eggs/salsa/beans/avocado experience.
