Soldier, Army City, Kansas, 1918

This real-photo postcard is a portrait of a soldier stationed in Kansas. The photo is dated on the front June 2, 1918. The notation "Army City" was a mystery to me for many years.

It turns out that when the large training camps were established near and within Fort Riley, Kansas, there were very few civilian towns nearby. In particular, Camp Funston, which housed up to 30,000 soldiers was far from nearly everything. I am told that the Army allowed civilian businesses to set up a town called "Army City" just beyond the gate of the camp, and many businesses moved in, such as barbers, tailors, and in this case, photographers. So, my guess is that this fellow was stationed at Camp Funston.
