To take full advantage of Flickr, you should use a JavaScript-enabled browser and
install the latest version of the Macromedia Flash Player .
Why is it I get crappy excuses for adding content. I know its hard to write software but if it happens over & over again I dont really feel like contributing,
repeated failure
*go to
reddit.com/submit
*select 'add to my saved sites' option
*add comment,
Too Many Ajax Calendars
*add url
www.joelonsoftware.com/items/2006/02/08.html
*press submit
*wait
*get error
Turns out the site has allready been added so theres some screwy code in selecting if the url has already been added.
I found out by clicking the page (twice) until it pushed through.

>all of them quite work for me most of the >time...
slashdot - gods of slashdot choose story submissions, maybe 10/page (unless you pay) & riddled with adverts.
standpoint.com - never tried it. Looks like McCarthy bait waiting to get you. Very Aristotian, black and white. The real world is grey.
Digg - sucks. Wastes space & the number of stories is reduced.
Use flickr & delicious. The downside of all this is attention. Attention is getting a bit thin as everyone tries to be everywhere. I notice for example Nat Friedman now has a flickr site but its only a fraction of his gazillion photos. Looking at the page it is a pale imitation of his site. So you have to wonder why bother?
>you are amazingly capable why not do it >yourself...
Don`t know if your being facetious here, but lets assume your serious.
Building a page is easy (template + webserver), building a page with links is easy (db+webserver+scripting), building a site that people use is a bit harder (webapp = db+webserver + scripting + content).
Building a site that is useful & visited by many requires (usability + webapp + bandwidth + costs), but more importantly a compelling reason for people to use it.
We are starting smaller at the app end & using a webapp to do a storefront, community drop in centre, app triage etc.
But this may change if we make some decent $$$.

maybe it sounded exaggerated but i only was refering to what i have seen till now where your work involves windows applications, webapps and using python instead to sticking to traditional languages. a rare thing to see here (in fact everybody i know uses java c# or c++)
the 48hours were a joke because i know how nice everything could be if the day only had more productive hours
the standpoint of yours about the same called platform is something i will think about as i already start to be a little paranoid about myself exposing to the flickr platform as well as sharing the same nickname with my over 1000 links in my del.icio.us directory. maybe i am going to kill my 43things.com account as well.. don't know yet.
and again, i didnt want to offend you in fact i enjoy nourishing my inner-it-voyeur
all the best

Hey Musha.
Repeat after me, 'I'm a goose, I am a goose'.
I'll be straight. If I take any offense (not very likely as most times I have a pretty thick hide) I'll tell you straight away. So stop cowering in the corner :)
'... windows applications, webapps and using python instead to sticking to traditional languages. a rare thing to see here (in fact everybody i know uses java c# or c++) ...'
This is an interesting comment. You know why? I bet its because they work in an environment where they *have* to use these languages. I dont. I use the languages that I can code quickly with, that are COSHER and that suit the job at hand.
If you ask your colleages what languages would they prefer to work with on a particular project, 10 to one I bet they would differ from what you describe. Paul Graham has a great article (How to start a Startup - Should you?) about this by the way.
Do you want to know the real reason python is chosen? Because its based on ansi C.
We use C at the server back end for speed - where needed. Python can be extended with C. We use C for the application work becuase its portable. Every other language mentioned java, cpp, c# is less portable than ansi c.

Just be as nice online as you would normally be offline. Try not to be extreme in opinion, gracious in accepting criticism. And prick any form of pomposity with humour.
Don't be afraid of speaking your mind. Others older & wiser than myself may advise you to hold your tongue for future employment. I'm my own boss, succeed or fail so for me this doesn't apply.

'just registered with reddit!'
Just be aware reddit may not live. Their continued success will depend on how savvy they are. Bandwidth costs will begin to bite them soon. Plus reddit is in many ways an immature (functionality wise) site. With little of the features you see in /.
If all you want is links, its fine.

The COSHER stuff blew me away! LOL! Very nice. I didn't know that Python is so highly integrable within ansi-c! Java is okay I really like it in fact but for simpler tasks something like Python, Ruby or even Perl is much more practical IMHO. Thanks for the infoload ;) I will go through that when I'm done with work see my recent thought about that.
