I was long overdue for a better Flickr icon, and a friend on Facebook had requested way back in November that I "treat the world to a pic of the man so all of facebook can stop holding its breath." So on this chilly winter evening I finally sat down — well, actually, I did it standing — to take some self-portraits. I had forgotten how difficult it is to take photographs without looking through the viewfinder, and to get the lighting to look at all acceptible when you're at the receiving end, and, finally, to simply judge shots of one's own face. I suppose that the expression I usually see in the mirror is a fairly neutral one, because I'm always surprised to see the kinds of expressions that others capture when my face is animated. To avoid capturing a simple blank neutrality, I basically had to stand in front of the bathroom mirror and try making difference faces.

It was only after taking a few dozen photos this evening, and trying to process two of them into acceptible form, that I realized that most of them looked pretty plainly like I was trying to smile. So I wound up using this one, which seems to catch me in the much more natural pose of looking rakishly out from under my brows. I think I like it.

After many tries I finally gave up on the idea of trying to have both ears showing, it just never worked out.

Thank you, reiscakes! It's only after trying for several minutes to fit my face into a small 48×48 icon that I now appreciate your interesting approach of using a photograph that's looking down at you, which foreshortens your face and allows it to fit better.

Then again, you're probably also helped by not having my forehead. :-)
