Bringing hope to Bristol's 'Gutter Children', Mary was a compassionate and idealistic woman who cared for the under-privileged and petty criminals in the city and devoted her life to ‘the young outsiders of society’.

From the late 1820s she opened a series of schools for girls and poor children in the city, as well as night schools for adults. She promoted free education for the poor and government support for the ragged school system and established the country’s first reformatory school for girls in The Red Lodge (now one of the city’s museums).

Mary Carpenter has been described as 'one of the most remarkable women of the 19th century'.
