okay -- i'm going to ask a really stupid
question --
why not just get just hop over to
holgamods.com and get the long exposure
option? It works GREAT -- and no clamps
necessary :-)
Just a thought -

Bob - Threshold told me the Holgamods locking
shutter thingie kept stripping out... plus I
got this one locally for 17 bucks and already
had the clamp sitting around ; )

Thanks man... true about what threshold
said... unfortunately Holga saw the good idea
and took it. Threshold had 2 modified Holgas
but both of the shutter lock stripped off.
That pod looks like a manfrotto with a rc2
head?

Yup - a 3011 with an 486RC-2. Solid as a
rock with my superwide... probably wouldn't
trust it with a big telephoto, but hey.

hm. should not work with a holga without
"N" - because otherwise a resting
finger on the shutter release would make
longer exposures - the shutter usually closes
after being pressed

Andreas - yeah, it only works on the newer
'120N' models that have a 'B' setting below
the lens.

Ignorant question - how do you keep the
camera still while clamping and unclamping
the release?
I'm about a few mouse clicks away from
buying a Holga online.
Folks like you and NoTraces have got me
really intrigued about the Holga bug.

I've seen the same issue with the threads
stripping out on the holgamod. I'd have the
same worries as byrdnest about camera
movement while clamping.
My solution was to drill a small hole in
the shutter release button and then glue a
little ring at the bottom of the rectangular
shape on what should be the lens mount. From
the small hole in the shutter release I
mounted a small hand bent L bracket out of
hanger wire. I push the shutter down and
just move the wire over to the ring and that
holds it in place.
I think your long exposure shots speak for
themselves though.

:-D Nice setup BURИBLUE. One of this days I
will try to find an holga camera of my own.
I really like the moody style of the Holga.
PS: I made a reference of you photos in one
of my pictures, hope you don't mind. www.flickr.com/photos/pedrovidigal/298934258/

Byrdnest - I do really long (i.e. 2-10
minute) exposures, in which a little camera
shake will never show as long as the bulk of
the exposure is motionless. It would be a problem for, say, a 15 second exposure,
though.
Pockets of Resistance - I think Zinkwazi
did the same thing, if I remember right.
Pedro - thanks! You should definitely try
one out.

Yep, I’ve been through 2 of them in the last
year alone. The first stripped out in the
winter and I thought that the extreme cold we
were shooting in made the plastic brittle and
led to the failure. I stripped my second one
late summer on a warm night after probably
only 3 night shoots.
If you have a HolgaMods cable release I
would recommend NEVER removing the cable
release from the camera – the threads are way
too delicate if you even slightly
cross-thread them.
But don’t worry if it all goes bad on you…
it’s a Holga and 2-part epoxy is your
customization friend…

"it’s a Holga and 2-part epoxy is your

No doubt. I'm thinking that you could
easily substitute a pre-tapped brass insert
for the threaded part on that holga mod.
Which would pretty much make the expensive
holgamod kit useless as you could form your
own housing with epoxy for the brass threaded
barrel.
I've been itching to redo my mod this way
as using a cable shutter relase is just so
much nicer and fancier.

I used a cut-down wirenut expoxied to the
body to do long exposure locking with the B
setting. I expect a tapped insert would be
more reliable, but a. it's a Holga and b. I
wanted it done right then ;-)
Cool mod, though.

I love the Irwin Quick Grip modification, but
there's a very easy do-it-yourself T setting
modification here: www.argonauta.com/html/holga_modifications.ht
m#XBShutter
On the downside, you'll lose your normal
shutter function when you do the
modification.
On the upside, you can buy another Holga
for the price of an Irwin Quick Grip!

Yeah, luckily I had one lying around already.
I saw one where a guy just shoved the fat
end of a zip tie into the gap above the
depressed shutter lever... cheapest
(non-destructive) one yet!

I just ordered a holga and have been looking
around at different mods that people have
tried. I should get mine in the mail soon.
Anyhow, I read some of the comments here
about reducing camera shake and I think I
have a solution to eliminate any possibility
of shake using this clamp. My idea would be
to block the light from the lens with your
hand or a card or whatever while your
clamping the shutter open. If you block out
all the light while you do this it shouldn't
affect the image if you shake the camera.
Once the shutter opens up and you have the
clamp in place take away the obstruction from
in front of the lens and begin counting your
exposure. When your esposure time passes
cover up the lens again and then unclamp the
shutter. You can shake the camera all you
want if no light is getting in thru the open
shutter. Thanx for the tip at any rate.
It'll save me from having to order a cable
release online. I'd much rather use a clamp
like this because I can pick one up at my
local dollar store or whatever.

Thanks for the tip, MDB - I'll try that,
using the flimsy lens cap that came with the
Holga. It'd be perfect, since it can slip on
and off easily (i.e. without moving the
camera).
Have fun with your new toy!
