• My new US vs UK work hours have had an interesting effect on my internal clock that I've not quite yet figured out. For over a decade I've tried to get up as close to 6:45 as possible to commute the 50 minutes into the same office. Whilst I've not always been entirely successful, I did know that nine hours and change later I could take off the costume and switch lives for the evening. With my work morning now starting a couple of hours later (and just twenty feet from my bed!), I have successfully reclaimed a portion of the day that has been lost since school holidays. The trouble is I'm not exactly sure what to do with it. Currently I'm using it to offset my inability to feel even the remotest bit tired until 2am but I cant help thinking there's a better way. In other news, you see me above, sat in my car having completely misjudged the time it would take to drive into the city. Arriving 40 minutes early, I staved off the crippling boredom with an episode of This American Life and a self portrait marathon, the scale of which lead the car park security guard to leave his hut and enquire exactly what the devil I was doing. Predictably, I had no answer.

• Aside from a 2 day bout of something nasty that saw me as the comedic response to the question "what's got two legs and barks", the stand out event of the week was a trip to see my first ever real movie in an IMAX cinema. I've seen the World from space and even some years ago travelled to the depths of the ocean but I've never seen a proper, block-busting feature film projected at 10 times normal size until now. And it was just immense. We checked out Dark Knight and apart from being a tremendous film in its own right this specially mastered version made everyone at the packed Think Tank cinema in Birmingham mouth the same expletive every time it switched from huge letterbox to obscene full frame IMAX formats. My stomach properly turned, roller coaster style as the camera dropped over the edge of the skyscraper in the opening aerial shot. Another huge benefit was that at £9.50 per ticket people were much more inclined to stop talking, switch off their phones and watch. Seriously, if you get the chance - you must. Above we see another somewhat smaller screen adventure as Nickster and I settle down to watch the European Grand Prix live from Valencia. With live timing by www.formula1.com and pizza by Domino it was an enjoyable race spoiled slightly by FIA stewards who decided to hold a investigation into what appeared to be a clear safety infringement after the race rather than immediately as the rules state ... presumable this investigation was to confirm the colour of the car under scrutiny.

• I'm not so bad with words. I write copy for ads and brochures as part of my job and ever since the obligatory teenage lyric obsession years, I've always enjoyed the challenge of saying more with less. There is however a complete brick wall, mental blank when I try to properly express my hatred of gardening. Usually I would drive nails into my eyes if it got me out of mowing the lawn but today as I looked out over my one foot high horticultural Krakatoa I could take it no longer so walked purposefully to the shed. Removing my under performing hover mower I was delighted to note that the leaky roof had conveniently mixed the exact proportions of rainwater and asphalt to create some kind of fertility super drug for what must surely now be the World's largest spider population. I suspect they may have been using my BBQ to hold evening wife swapping soirées. Shortly after I also discovered the exact biological make up of my lawn so for those of you who are interested in achieving the lush carpet of green you see above it's simply a case of mixing equal parts moss, dandelion stalks and cat shit.
