Five years of madness...

I'd resolved not to post any more Vietnam pictures, but today after five years of my country repeating what it did thirty years ago - Displaying ignorance of the history and culture of other nations and a naive understanding of the use of our great powers; to say nothing of disrespecting our individual freedoms and guarantees of human rights embodied in our Constitution, I decided to share this picture. At least after a year in Vietnam I could go home - our guys can't now...Somehow we have to end this. We may still become a great nation but what we are doing now around the world in many ways reflects what we are doing to ourselves at home and only shows how much we lack in confidence about our maturity, goodness, understanding of ourselves and our compassion as a society. I fear we have a long ways to go...Polaroid photo taken by a friend from Co B 2nd Bn, 7th Cav 1st Air Cav Div, Vietnam.

The times are so different now. I don't see
see the abject anger in the streets and on
the campuses as we saw then. I was still
pretty young at that time but I remember.
The draft helped equalize the burden except
for the very priveleged like George W. Bush.
The media was much more responsible and
objective. The American people now seem so
easily manipulated by fear. The media just
pick up and spew the talking points. I fear
we're in for a big dissappointment come
November.

We have a President who insists on defining
failure as success and he could care less
about the disaster he has left in his wake.
If young people today were facing the threat
of being drafted into the military against
their will - as was done during the Viet Nam
era - the streets would be overflowing with
civilian opposition to Bush.

well said, as always, Frank -- it's time for
the military to stand up to the president and
put limits on tours of duty, etc... it can't
be sustained. we also need to provide so
much more psychological health support to the
troops and their families than they are
currently getting. people opposed to the war
are maligned for "not supporting our
troops" but I can't see what the war
proponents are doing to support our troops,
other than telling them to "hang in
there"...indefinitely.
