this little red star is enormous

I gave up on high school a long time ago, never graduated. 2 years passed by before I got around to getting a GED. Then it took almost 3 years to finish a 2-year associate's degree. After that it was another 2 and a half years before I finished what was meant to be 2 years of classes. Now, I still have to take another 2 classes before I get my bachellor's. It's frustrating and I'm tattered by what I choose to go through. Proud - but tattered.
But all frayed ends notwithstanding, this little red star is what you get when you've made your way through the Social Thought and Political Economy program at UMass. STPEC is an amazing community made up of powerfully intelligent and ideologically righteous people. They are passionate people who are compelled to know as much as they can about some of humanity's most impossible malfunctions. For most, this push to learn comes from a real desire to do something to make other people's lives healthier.
This little red star is what you walk away with when that amazing communty of people recognizes the work that you've done to know the best you could. This little red star is an affirmation that someone made their way through learning about things that can be very difficult and often very painful to know. Indeed, it is more often the case that there is no way of knowing, only a way of knowing how to try to know.
This is my little red star - and for me, it is enormous.

This is what Flickr does for me. It gives me
a beautiful image to look at, first thing in
the morning. At first, I think, wow what a
minimal, and beautiful, Christmas star that
Egg's put up . Then I think, I LOVE the
texture on the ( unbleached calico?) fabric
backgroung. Pin-sharp focus.
Then I read the description. I don't
totally understand how significant it is,
because I have nothing in my own world that
equates with that wee star, but WOW, I
applaud your star! Wear a green shirt to set
it off, or a green beret!

Whoohoo, and congratulations again!
Sorry we missed each other yesterday
afternoon. I was totally fried and had to
get to the Credit Union to take care of some
stuff there, so I didn't linger on campus
long after my defense was over.

i completely agree with fifi -- this is
flickr. it connects us, it gives us a
platform to stand on and say "look what
i did!" or "i need help!" or
"look at this piece of cloth!" --
all equally as valid. all part of the one.
you have so many reasons to be proud of
what you've accomplished. all that effort
encapsulated in this one little huge star.
it's brilliant. you're brilliant. YAY YOU!!!!

It's definitely a lot cooler than the class
rings everyone buys at graduation. So now I
understand the other photo Matt took that
said 'You're a star!'

Some people have children who go though
everything easily. Some people have children
who do nothing. But, some people have
children who work so hard that their parent
can't express enough how proud they are. I am
one of those very very proud parents.

That's an icon with loaded imagery :)
This shows a bit of naïvety, but I didn't
realize there'd be places like that in the
U.S...
Congratulations! And I hope that whatever
comes next is great for you.

I'm pleased for you and proud of you -- as we
say in Texas, "you done good, real
good"
I also gave up on high school and never
graduated -- somehow it makes my latter
education more precious to me -- treasure
what you have learned and help other people

Congratulations. I too quit high school and
remember how it felt to get my bachelors. It
was an amazing feeling of accomplishment that
cannot be explained. it was worth all the
hard work, which I'm sure you know. Again
congratulations!
