feeling weepy today, but so far only good
things have turned on the waterworks --
passing a hawk perched on a tree on my way to
work; seeing a photo of a good friend in his
firefighter uniform, having just passed his
test; seeing your big beautiful face through
a big beautiful lens.

Very nice! I'm not knowledgeable enough
about lenses and cameras to be as impressed
as I should probably be, but it's in your
hands, and, *as we all know* it's whose hands
the precious equipment is in, that really ,
really matters!

It's a great lens, probably my favourite. And
it looks like you're going to do great stuff
with it :)

@everyone - thanks very much! I love all the
flickrlove coming my way lately! I feel
remiss that I'm not quite yet able to
entirely reciprocate with views and favs and
comments just yet -- but I'm just a few pages
away from done with each of my last 2 papers
of the semseter, so I'll be around in force
soon enough. Y'all have to promise not to
tell my dad though. I'm serious. I saved the
wrapping paper so I can rewrap the thing and
I'm hoping he won't check in on my
photostream before the 25th (he has dial-up
[**GASP!!**] so I'm hoping that'll work in my
favor!) ;-P
@ jen - nothing is better than sincerely
mushy,
emotionally-charged-with-human-appreciation
type tears. Don't wipe them away... Let them
fall all the way down your cheeks and into
your lap. Make a puddle of them, fill a pond
with them, make the sea level rise. And then
go swimming. *love*
@Morgan, you have the lens? It was when jen
(jkonig) got the lens and posted pics taken
with it that pushed me over. I knew at that point that I had to squeeze one of
these sweet contraptions out of somewhere...
Thankfully, one of the small handful of
common interests that my Dad and I share is
photography - so he seemed genuinely excited
to get this for me. When I told him on the
phone that wanted a fixed length f/1.8 he
said, "oh, wow! you could do a lot of really cool stuff with that!" And I replied,
"I know! I know! I know!" ... And
then we both chuckled. It was a good dad/egg
moment - and I really appreciate every such
moment I can get.
@Joan - the lens is less than $80.00 (US)
on amazon right now. But I'd wait till after
christmas to get it because the price has
gone up by at least 10 clams since the
shop-o-rama season began. But you NEED this
lens. Buy it and we'll start a cult. I'll be
the missionary [recruiter], jen can write our
gospels [propogandist], morgan can be the
journeyman [R&D director] and you can
preach the good word to the flock
[proselytizer]. Sound good, everyone?

I find that it's a superb lens for portrait
photography - especially the candid kind,
most of these - and I use it regularly, multiple times
each week. It's particularly good in low
light conditions, even at night with a bit of
directional light from somewhere, when you
can ramp up the ISO settings, shoot wide open
and go without a flash. Heresy, eh?
That's good about your father - I can't put
my finger on any common interests that I have
with mine.
