Open one day a year as part of Toronto’s Doors Open festival, the TTC Harvey Yards are amazing.

This one storey, masonry and concrete streetcar maintenance facility and general repair shops was named after D.W. Harvey, who was the General Manager of the TTC from 1924 to 1938. Harvey Shops is located at the TTC's historic Hillcrest complex and opened in 1923. This property was once home to the Hillcrest Race Track. It is now one of the TTC's major maintenance garages where highly skilled employees maintain and repair the TTC's fleet of buses and streetcars.

If I’d checked the web site before leaving home, I’d have realized that tripods weren’t permitted and I’d have left mine in the car. As I had it, though, and as no one told me not to I decided to use it. Far from being scolded by the workers, I had some interesting chats about photography and cameras, and they made certain I didn’t miss some neat shots. So thanks to Chris, Dave, John, Steve, and others who’s names I didn’t get!

This is “the moat”, a central trench with three rail lines that support a moving “bridge” that can carry a streetcar or bus sideways between repair bays.
