it probably betrays my fetishism to admit
that i can't stop looking at the bicycle.

Maybe I already asked you this when I noticed
it on another pic, but I think it was someone
else.
I noticed flipping through your beautiful
pics that you seem to ride almost exclusively
crank bros egg beaters. I'm interested in
your in depth perspective on them.
Why do I ask? Because they were the first
clipless pedals I ever loved. I ride them
almost exclusively too, though I like
platforms on some of my more recreational
bikes.
I had to replace the bearings once, and
went through a lot of clips this last year...
3,500 miles isn't to bad, my first foal year
road riding... and I broke a spring which
while technically out of warranty the lovely
crank bros warranteed them anyway. It's
funny, because I'm a big guy, 6'5" and
not terribly light... but others have
complained about bearing longevity and I have
no problem... just with the clips.
Anyway, I'm wondering your perspective.
You seem to have a VERY keen sense of
style, I commend you. I love your bikes.
They're all works of art, beautiful
expressions of the simplicity of form follows
function, and best of all I can tell just
from looking at them that they're very
comfortable rides... set up for enjoyment and
pleasure... not some misguided notions of
racing, off road riding that ironicly most
bikes sold are set up for... at the sacrifice
of rider comfort, though they are clearly
not, nor never will be raced or ridden
aggresively off road... it's always
interested me that companies would push such
notions leading many casual riders clueless
as to how much fun riding reall can be. A
sacrifice of short term gain for long term
rewards and lifetime riders. In fact I think
it's an american thing. I've seen otherwise
in european cultures... for example... in
japan and china nearly all bikes are what we
hear call "women's bikes"... and
why not for casual and comuting rides... it
ads very little weight and so much ease of
enjoyment... especially for commuters. But
that's just the tip of the iceberg... you'll
notice a completely different exploration of
the bicycle in many european cities too...
cultures where cycling as a utilitarian
endevor... i.e. general transportation... is
not so looked down apon as here in the
U.S.... or perhaps I should say is so much
better respected.
This line of thinking I propose gets at one
thing... is part of the appeal of the crank
bros the sheer simplicty of the pedal?
Personally I love the form factor. I love
the ease of entry and I love the fact they
don't rear up my shins and calves, though
occasionally I will get a bruised shin. This
simplicity also has the advantage of low
maintence and easy maintence.
Finally, I have one last question.
I noticed you use, or suggested you used a
light with generator. As I tend to be doing a
LOT more night riding these days and tend to
value sustainable and flexible
technologies... ie. not having to remember to
charge batteries... I was thinking about some
sort of generator light. Especially since
LED's are developing VERY rapidly as of late
in intensity and efficiency. I have a
rechargeable proprietary system I bought for
trail use... but it is big and bulky and
requires constant attentiveness and
deliberate planning... and when it runs out
it's out... so recently I've been using a
Nightrider Ultra Fazer Max... a single fairly
high intensity LED system, or as intense as
can be running on two AA batteries. I like
it because I can just leave it on the bike
and forget about it... yet it's there when I
need it. And if it does run out of batteries
I can always pinch some from my Canon a520
digital camera which I carry everywhere...
that said, I'm still looking for some
possible simple generator system in the next
year or two.
I'm hoping with recent advances something
with a beautifully simple form factor...
fairly bright LED, and perhaps a battery
"energy cache" to normalize light
might hit the market.
The only thing I've seen is the age old
system that makes contact right with the
rubber tire. I'm wondering about this system
you mentioned... it sounded like it was based
on the hub.
Anyway, I realize that was pretty long, but
I was hoping, being as how you love bikes it
might interest you and you might have some
good feedback.
Oh, and btw, my primary ride is a Surly
Cross check... and a little secrete... my bro
is the design guy at QBP (makers of the
surly)... so if you have any feedback I'll be
sure to relay it to him. I'm happy to see a
Surly group on flickr. Did you see they
teamed up with Xtracycle for the Big Daddy...
first bike to be made for and sold with an
xtracycle.
Good riding.
