Kevin, this is an absolutely stunning
picture. This is what a photographer waits
all day for; the last 5 minutes of perfect
light. And what you did with it is beyond
words!!!

@Clem: Thanks most sincerely!
Indeed over the course of many weeks I had
the idea of taking the best cow photo I can
personally take, and deliberately went out
late in the day to look for it. Upon meeting
these particular bovines, I stayed close to
them in deep snow through an actual blizzard
all the while watching the sky and their
positions as a group and as individuals. It
was one of those moments when you know you've
got your shot because you watched it come
together.

tranquility I get from the picture.
Well done.

I would say you accomplished your mission!
This is awesome! The cows look content even
in the cold. Although I do like cold milk.
This photo make me want to pack my bags as

@Natacha: Well said. Thanks!
@Julie: Yes, this is very much
representative of Alberta. Thanks! If you
have time, take a quick browse of just my
Alberta photos on Flickr River. I think your Brownie would like it too.
:-)
@Mind Meld: Thank you! Shortly after this,
the cows hightailed it into the trees. Make
sure to pack your camera!

foothills, but I'd love to know where.

I'm listening to Franz Schuberts Unfinished
Symphony No.8 in B minor; as I'm wandering
through your photostream. Its a perfect
combination; it draws me to the image, making
me wish I could pass into it and experience
the moment wholly. Still, doing so
vicariously is no small thing. Its an
enviable record of an enviable moment. A tip
of the hat to you for posting such a
beautiful photo!

@Tim: Cheers!
@Ricey: I appreciate that. Grand Valley
Road starts about 5 km west of Cochrane and
parallels the last foothills before they turn
into mountains. The road is gravel most of
the way and eventually leads to the village
of Water Valley. It's a nice drive. :-)
@Max: I always like hearing what people see
in a photo. Thanks for that! I'm making use
of your tip too. :-)

@Chris: Thank you kindly!
@enbekken: I like the sound that!
@Todd: The sun going behind a little bit of
cloud (plus being diffused by snowfall which
does not really show up) and manually
setting the exposure helped with the range.
I'm pleased you like it!

Did you use ISO 100 in a dark setting like
this? I'm going to photograph at sunset too
and don't went to mess up the pictures by
using the wrong settings... :-)

of course you would make a pasture scene with
bovines picture framing material! I love
that flickriver page! It really displays
your pictures nicely. I have heard of it,
but never seen it.
I love the little trails through the snow.
I have always been intrigued by how cattle
herd and follow paths. Well worth the wait
for that awesome light

@Sebastian: Thank you! I was able to use ISO
100 here mainly because the snow was
reflecting a lot of light even though the sky
was dark (snow at night is a very special
case). For true night photography in the
dark without a tripod, you should use a
higher ISO to allow faster shutter speeds to
minimize blur from hand movement. When you
have time to use a tripod, use your lowest
ISO (e.g., 100) to minimize noise. Photos
where a sunset fills the frame or silhouettes
are desired can be shot at medium or low
ISOs. That is my experience anyway. I hope
that helps.
@t00fa: Thanks. Congratulations on your
graduation!
@Nick: Thanks very much!
@graficodeprensa: Gracias!
@Eirik: I'm very flattered! Please relay my
thanks to your mother, Mari, and Eyvind.

the cow tracks. :-)
