Holey crap are you sure those are stars?? Did
you add extra ones?
;~)
I remember.......Actually, since I live in a
large city, one tends to forget that stars
exist as you just cannot see many....the odd
one here and there
Then I go up north to my cottage and lo and
behold the sky is so full of them it blows my
mind, each and every time....It is tantamount
to culture shock, except in this case it is
"nature without smog and concrete"
shock!!
LOL
Absolutely amazing long exposure !!

Instant fave. I had no idea what this was
when viewing as a thumbnail. I was blown away
when I clicked on this. AWESOME night shot of
the star filled sky and illuminated tent. I
love the silhouetted trees too. This is
stunning.

Ah, life under the stars and no rain except
the odd meteor shower. Fabulously captured,
Michael. Camping out never looked more
tempting. ;-) - Viewed large, this is
probably the most amazing photo of the week.
You can even see the Milky Way. You rock,
man.

Nicely done, at first glance I was wondering
how you were able to do a shot with a long
enough exposure to capture the stars and
still keep it short enough to not show any
movement. I've never attempted a shot like
this at ISO1600, my camera doesn't have that
D300 noise free feature. :-)

Hey! I'm an administrator at the Capture My Colorado website and found your photos via a Flickr
search for great Colorado photos. Colorado
Mountain News Media is looking for photos
just like yours to be a part of the Capture
My Colorado project.
It's a fun project all about publishing the
best photos of Colorado in a book. Here's how
it works: people upload their photos, then
vote on the ones they think are the best. The
best photos end up in a hard-bound
coffee-table art book. There's also prizes to
be won. It's all free and I think your photos
would be a great fit. You retain all rights
and you get some great exposure for your
website or Flickr page. If you've got a free
minute and want a shot at getting published,
winning prizes, or just want to see some
other great Colorado photos, head over to Capture My Colorado.
Oh and we use the Flickr API so putting your
photos on the Capture My Colorado website is
a click of a button.
Thanks for your time!

Thanks for the comments all. I will be sure
to thank my wife too who had to tolerate that
light being on a bit longer than she wanted
to be awake heh! Speaking of which to pull
this off I used an LED lantern. It ended up
being too bright by itself so I wrapped some
thin foam around the light to tone it down a
bit to keep the tent more balanced with the
stars. Thanks for noticing! ;-)))
,
Nope, I promise no extra stars were added.
;-)))
As luck would turn out the clouds moved in
moments after this capture and that was it
for night shooting for my weekend camping
trip. But as you'll see the blizzard the
change of weather brought was gorgeous!
,
I'm lucky that the D300 can manage shots
like this at 1600 ISO. On my D70 this shot
would have been a sea of noise. I did
selectively run Noiseware Pro on the image,
but had to do so with a light touch so as to
not loose any stars.
,
I generally allow public viewing of my EXIF
data so you can always check for what shutter
speed, ISO, f/stop, etc. One of my favorite
things about flickr is learning from each
other, so I really value when others make
their's available as well. Here I used 1600
ISO at 30 seconds. Also using a lower f-stop
was key to make sure to let max light from
the stars in to catch as many as possible.

This is such a stunning picture! I love how
the tent looks all illuminated against the
black starry night! It makes me long for the
days when I was young and my family would go
camping in the Blue Ridge Mountains - because
of all the stars and the unpolluted sky, you
almost didn't need a flashlight at night to
get around!
