A farmer. India by fredcan

A farmer. India

Taken in the village of Dev Nagar, just a few kms outside Pushkar, Rajasthan.

Scanned from Fuji film. I had previously uploaded this photo about a year ago, but this is a much better scanned version.

Pushkar Mela: Left alone. India by fredcan

Pushkar Mela: Left alone. India

November 2007. The annual Pushkar mela (fair) will last for about a week. This is the time when the small holy town, set at the edge of the desert in the Western State of Rajasthan sees its population grow to hundreds of thousands within days. The camel and cattle fair also attracts pilgrims who come to visit the Brahma Temple and bathe in the holy Pushkar lake for the Kartik Purnima (full moon).

A man is sitting alone on the now deserted mela grounds, dominated by the giant wheels, as if to remind each and everyone of Samsara, the cyclical aspect of this earthly life. The man's presence and story will remain a mystery. He was not begging, nor was he inclined to answer any of my questions. A lost and forgotten soul, i concluded. An unfathomable karma. Time to leave Pushkar, i thought!

Pushkar Mela: The last traders. India

The mela is now coming to an end. Most pilgrims have already left and the last few traders are just about to return to their villages throughout the State of Rajasthan. While the 2007 Pushkar fair will be remembered for some for being a prosperous one, others will go back home with their remaining camels and horses, less successful.

A group of Western tourists have come to watch the sunset and the life of the families who are camping on the mela grounds, while they are themselves being watched with great curiosity. The Pushkar fair has become one of the most popular cultural and religious events in India over the years, drawing hordes of tourists and TV crews from around the world. But for the thousands of traders and pilgrims who have come from the most remote villages of Rajathan, the presence of those "funny" tourists is just another amusing attraction.

At the end of a hectic day, camels are taken by their owners to one of the water supplies on the mela grounds.
