CTA Wilson Avenue Shops (destroyed by fire, 1996)
This old viaduct was part of a freight line that once ran all the way to Milwaukee. It was torn down some time around the turn of the decade. Note the old CTA Wilson Avenue Shops (destroyed by a mysterious fire in October, 1996) at right.

the freight line this was part of still
exists, but it's now operated by the CTA
since it shared a road bed with the Howard
line. I believe it's mainly used for Purple
Line trains so they can pass the local Red
Line trains. After Howard I'm not sure if it
it still exists or not. It may be the Purple
Line, or it may be abandoned entirely.

@akagoldfish: This line (or part of it
anyway) used to run along Lakewood Avenue,
past the house where my family lived when I
was growing up. It was still being used by
trains in the mid-to-late 70s, but by about
1980 it had pretty much been abandoned. The
tracks petered out somewhere north of
Addison, near Wrigley Field. The southern end
was down around Cabrini-Green (according to a
grade-school friend of mine who went
exploring on his bike one afternoon). At one
time it did link up with what eventually
became the Howard L. You can see where the
tracks connected just south of the Wilson
Avenue station.

akagoldfish and genial23 you guys are both
right. The tracks led to
the Chicago North Shore & Milwaukee
R.R. freight terminal which
was at ground level at Wilson Avenue. There
was a building there
that housed the NS&M freight operations
that transferred all kinds
of freight from their trains to various
trucks. And as you stated their
trains shared the "L" structure
on the outside tracks until they
reached Dempster St. in Skokie then they
continued on their own
private right of way all the way to
Mundelein and Milwaukee.
The NS&M ceased operations in 1963 and
everything was ripped-up
and or demolished. Hope this info helps.

the southern part of the lake wood branch was
still in operation north of Fullerton as
recently as a year ago. However, the last
client on the line, Peerless Candy closed
this year, ending service.
Here's a recent picture of the branch in
operation www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=134094&
