This is a Then and Now of a litho postcard from the beginning of the 19th century. The 'Belle Epoque' hotel on the postcard did really exist but was torn down in the 1950ies and replaced with the current one.

The Rigi is one of the highest mounains in the pre-alipine area (1800 m), geologically it does not belong to the Alps. It is situated in the center of Switzerland between the Lake Lucerne (Vierwaldstättersee) and the Lake of Zug. Since 1872 there is a cog railway leading up to this top. Famous writers such as Mark Twain and Goethe have been guests in the above hotel.
