No more gas

No more gas

The fuel ran out at many Shell petrol stations yesterday as tanker drivers entered the third day of a strike about pay.
At this outlet in South London they even ran out of "out of order" covers for the pumps and had to resort to plastic bags and a hand written note.
The cashier says he doesn't expect any more fuel until Thursday. If the drivers don't get what they want they plan another strike next weekend.

Terror Suspect?

Terror Suspect?

Today I was stopped by police for taking photographs in my local street.
Two non-uniformed officers flashed their warrant cards and questioned me under Section 44 of the Terrorism Act 2000.
This law gives the British police powers to randomly stop someone without reasonable suspicion, providing the area has been designated a likely target for attack.
The record of the “stop and account” pictured here shows that I aroused their suspicions because I was “taking a photograph of a road”.
Crucially this road in Elephant and Castle, South London, is near an electricity substation, which they said had been deemed as a potential terror “hot spot”.
They wanted my name address and date of birth. I refused these details.
I explained that I had nothing to hide but that I believed it unnecessary for the police to keep a record of my personal details just because I had a camera in my hand.
The officers were polite and respectful.
I’d be the first to complain if the police did not properly protect us from terrorism but Britain’s law makers are playing fast and loose with long established basic rights and freedoms. Only this week our Prime Minster Gordon Brown forced through a law that will allow someone to held for 42 days without being charged with and offence. They may not even be told why they are being held.
The officers I met today were polite and respectful and said they understood my concerns. However there have been many cases of officers stopping, and searching people with cameras and even forcing the deletion of pictures to avoid arrest.
It is such a problem that Austin Mitchell, Member of Parliament, has addressed the House of Commons on the issue.
His early Day motion can be read here:

UPDATE:
See below for the advice from civil liberties group LIBERTY on your rights if you are stopped under section 44 - you do not have to give your name.

Elephant & Castle Underground Station

Elephant & Castle Underground Station

Elephant and Castle tube station sign and vintage tiles. Quite a few of these signs across the London underground network were replaced with modern versions. This is a nice old one with wooden frame. ISO 320, 1/6 second.

Pram fruit

Pram fruit

A woman sells strawberries from a Silver Cross pram, Mary Street, Dublin, Ireland.
When I first saw the gangs of women pushing these prams through the streets of north side Dublin I thought it was some sort of protest.
But no it's just an ingenious way of moving and selling fruit.
