Anti-torture protest |
Antitorture activist (and US Navy
veteran) Joe Tougas undergoes simulated
waterboarding on the UC Berkeley campus.
Although organizors later revealed that
Tougas had plastic over his face to
prevent water from filling his lungs ,
he still described the sensation of
confinement and suffocation as among the
most terrifying of his life.
"I wanted people to understand
what waterboarding is, how horrendous
and horrible and torturous this
is," Tougas told me. "And it
being done in our name... Right now, as
we speak, someone is being tortured by
the U.S. in a dark prison, and they're
never going to see their family again. I
get to go home tonight, but they're
never going to get to go home
again."
There's also a not-very-good video I
