Scylla Mosaic

This mosaic was found under the foundations of the Greco-Roman "House of Dionysus" and is perhaps 400 - 500 years older than the others in the house. It uses the ancient pebble mosaic method and dates from the 4th or 3rd century BC. According to Greek legend, Scylla was at the center of an ancient love triangle of unrequited love. She was loved by Glaucus but she did not love him. She appealed to the sorceress Circe for help in deflecting Glaucus attention, but Circe herself loved Glaucus and decided to put an end to Glaucus' interest in Scylla by turning Scylla into a horrible monster. So, Circe poured a magic potion into a bay where Scylla like to bathe. When Scylla entered the water to cool off, the magic potion turned the lower part of her body into a combination of three dogs and a sea monster. Scylla was not pleased. She never left the water again and acted out her anger by sinking any ships that came near her.
