"Sensibility and choice starts to
diminish .... "
My interpretation of this phrase is that,
while we are given a "choice" of
filters to block a wide swath, that we are
diminishing our "choices" in the
environment of detail. So, by having a
"choice", we reduce our
"choices". In my opinion, the
balance of the cited sentence is right on no
matter which side of the filter debate one
falls.

And look what happened to Magnolia
Thunderpussy when Flickr rules were said to
have been broken - and archive of 17,000
images lost.

encouragement,
Wow, to be honest I didn't delve that
deep when I wrote this but in fact you make a
very powerful analysis. And it fits exactly
what I was thinking in that we are
diminishing our critical faculties when we
turn to such things as automated filtering.
And it is bothersome to me that people are so
eager to relinguish their absolute control to
others. As when you institute the filter you
are basically saying the programmer is the
one who knows best. Now some people don't
want to see this stuff and the aims of the
programmer and the user coincide but as you
pointed out when you change your choices you
in fact reduce the fineness of your choices.
The tension here will always be present as
there are those who want to explore and do
searches and not be presented with anything
they feel is objectionable. And that is
understandable and those who want to exposure
of what is objectionable to others and not be
by DEFAULT eliminated from the greater pool
of choice. We are in times where our culture
is in constant debate. And the elements of
the debate there have become polarized by
those who would make the debate a lightning
rod for many things. So why should the
internet and places like flickr be spared.

I agree completely! Well done! I hate
censorship in general. We let our son watch
everything and he has grown up into a fine
upstanding human being. People's fears squash
them.

First they came for the porn
All snotty and stuff
And bits of pillow flufff
Then they came for the satired toon
Then they burned pictures of moon
Then they tore down

Also, it is now known that over 350 other
photos communicating a similar viewpoint were
similarly sanitized during the same
operation.
