Something about the composition gives this a
crooked and unbalanced feel. The centered
subject might be part of it; by making that
choice you've crunched most of the
interesting landscape features over to the
right side, and the entire lower half of the
photo is full of boring railing. Maybe there
was a better angle.
still, your use of the word
"penultimate" almost extracted a
save from me.

This looks way too forced. It is almost as
if you were taking a pic of somebody and
trying to force some type of meaning into the
pic and then when you got home and looked at
it you thought that there still wasn't enough
there so you manipulated the colors and the
exposure in a effort to manipulate the viewer
into recognizing your brilliance at
discovering the meaning in this meaningless
end of year nonsense. In the end the picture
still isn't all that great. Better than
some, but not really good.
