Liberated 2

Liberated 2

It wasn't just the bananas that were liberated! Humans too, as the pool comes out of it "hivernage" and the solar heating gets to work (We installed 26 sq m of south-facing panels on the barn roof). The water temperature was up to 26˚C today from 13 a week ago!

By the way, the banana trunk that failed to recover after the winter (front right) is the one which had the fruit last year - apparently they usually do die after fruiting

Liberated 1

Liberated 1

Beginning of May and suddenly it's spring - I cut down the banana trees in Nov by sawing through the trunks about 1.5m above ground. They've been wrapped in 10cm of fibreglass insulation and a layer of plastic to stop them freezing. By the end of February the new growth was pushing up the protection - here they are finally liberated and looking a bit battered. This is what they were like last June and then we had bananas in July! - you can see the Sully château pigeon loft in the background - and the contrail of plane going towards Paris in the Geneva-Paris corridor (right over our heads).

Green, wet and determined

Green, wet and determined

Totally unphased by torrential rain this very wet male green woodpecker was determined to clean out the last ant from the nest in our back lawn ...

Prelude, Blue Footed Bobby & Fugue in B-flat major

Prelude, Blue Footed Bobby & Fugue in B-flat major

Kenneth Jonsson asked me if he could use my Galapagos booby photos for the wonderful music video arrangement of Bach's famous fugue. Here's a still. Download the whole video here and leave a comment. I love it - it reminds me of Terry Gilliam's superb animations for Monty Python.
