Clovis Press Closes Up

On Sunday April 30th, 2006 I came across a "going out of business sale" for the Clovis Press Bookstore. This wonderful yet small and charming bookstore was like a local landmark for me on Bedford. You would never see a bookstore like that in Manhattan, and this sort of shop is one of things that makes Williamsburg a special place to live. From what I understand their rent went up, and they had to close shop.
This collage was created in Photoshop from two photos I took with my Treo Cellphone camera.

The NYC Social group had a meet up in fron of the store last Sunday as the owners were packing. It was a very sad scene.
And yes, their landlord caused the store to close.

Do you know if they might re-open else where?

I didn't ask, it just didn't seem appropriate.
The landlord should feel ashamed of himself.

I understand - everytime a business closes up it's the loss of someone's dream.

I'm not a fan of the landlords, but the demise of Clovis is the owner's fault and no one else's. The owner hadn't paid the last several months of rent and hadn't paid the book distributors or publishers! She even owed the Zapitistas money!
Before it closed, two different subsequent groups of employees tried to buy the store from her with the intention of running it as a collective, but the owner drug her feet and played games until no one was interested. In fact, one employee invested several thosand dollars and never got any of it back.
[edit] I don't think the owner is a bad person, but I also think this story needs to be heard. I edited out specific numbers and names, since they're not necessary and because they make it obvious who I spoke to. I'm going to talk to everyone I spoke to, and make sure they want their story public. [/edit]
