Great Egret (Ardea alba), Morro Strand State Beach, Morro Bay, CA 16may2007 - Canon 20D 100-400mm IS handheld - photo by Mike Baird
bairdphotos.com - NEW 5/20/07 See a "manipulated" version of this photo at
www.flickr.com/photos/mikebaird/507188808/ - this "manipulation" was attempted because the horizon is not perfectly level in the above original, and straightening the image would have clipped a bit of the top wing of the Great Egret... by comparing each image you can see where I have cloned pieces of the sky, water, and tips of the top wing and tips of the feet to complete the composition. I like them both, but think that I like the
feel of the original more. It's more intimate
and, at the same time, conveys more action.
Some critics are adamant that the horizon in
an ocean shot must be horizontal, but who
made that rule? It's not (like one comment I
read) as though water will all leak out of
the edge of the photo! Besides, the angle of
horizon in this particular shot is no
different than the edge of a big swell that
is about to become a wave.
(I notice in your altered version you
lightened things. I'd love to see your
original with only the Egret's face a bit
lighter. My $0.02.)

c.cobb Thanks for that perspective... it is an
interesting new digital world, where reality
is always manipulated a bit just in the
normal processing/conversion of a RAW image.
Feel free to play with the original www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=501821581&
photo_page... - I bet you are right that is one took the
time to mask out certain areas the tonality
and noise could be greatly improved.
