Amazing and wonderful set.
Is it difficult to take pictures without the presence of tourists?, I read there are !!50.000!! visitors per year to attend this festival.

no no, there was, i think, 100 tourists per day, and the festival lasts 2 days!!! Including many who stay under a tent (hot sun,i burned!) or behind fence! And as there is 1000 tribesmen, you have space and choice!

These are some of the best photos I've ever seen of PNG! Thank you for sharing! I'm glad to see that you were able to get some nice shots! (I tried not to favourite them all!) You've really captured the vibrancy of the festival - I've never been, but would really like to go one day!

On a side note, I hope the tradition and beauty of the place will be preserved forever ...not be trampled by commercialisation and tourism.

So colorful and beautiful. How many photographers go to this? it must be a sight to behold. I would love to shoot that festival, amazing. How did you find the people being photographed? were they receptive, did they communicate with you? did you pose anybody or did you just shoot away?

So many questions, I love your shots, you remind me a little of Foto Morgana another fav of mine.

Eric, as a Papua New Guinean I was breathless when I came across your pics. I see allot of pictures taken at festivals here but I have never seen them in the way you've shown them.

I feel instantly proud of my country just looking at the images. You really should do a gallery showing in PNG sometime. It really is a crime that you have captured my country so beautifully and yet we sometimes forget our own beauty living here.

Also would it be okay if I talked about your pics and showed some of them on my blog,

Hello Eric, a wonderful Set of Images. Your work here is inspiring, and for me there is a real connection. I was born in Mount Hagen in '71..and as a small boy I was taken to many Sing Sings by my parents. We left PNG in 74 and sadly I have never been back since.
My father took 100's of pictures of the Sing Sing's, and throughout PNG during the period '70 - '73. Your photos are very reminiscent of many of the photos taken by my father at the Sing Sing's.. it would seem that not much has changed in these Sing Sing traditions over the last 35 years.
One day I must devote myeslef to digitizing and restoring the family photo archive from PNG, which also includes East Africa in the mid to late 60's.
Your work is of the highest documentary standard and I will spend many more hours enjoying the images, and the sense of feeling of the places that you have captured.C'est tres Formidable!

This series has inspired my youth to create an entirely different artistic expression for their breakdance presentation under development called "Tribal Union".
The power of your indigenous images opened their minds, broke some barriers and caused them to create...............

really beautiful, but from one who has lived more than a decade in Mt. Hagen I am amazed that you were not mugged, raped or murdered while you were there.

tribalism is not a good thing and life and life expectancy for the locals is really low

Your set is my favorite above all others on Flickr. All ethnic pictures remind me of all those books I used to watch about explorers. This is a social -anthropological study with the added value of your ability to grab color, the right character in the perfect pose with an amazing control of shadows, light, skin tones. Besides, there' no fear or lack of trust in their eyes, your camera establishes a dialogue with these people...it is a set to dream and enjoy.

Your photo's are AMAZING ... in fact, I don't think there is superlative that adequately captures the experience of being mesmerised by your images.

I have been thinking about (but never really committed myself to) a visit to PNG for years; I think my mind is now made up. The diversity, the colour, the primitive beauty depicted by your images has reignited my enthusiasm for this trip.

Is your book Papous available with English text or only French at present ?

cheers

Eric, I will go to Mt. Hagen in this coming August, any hints for my journey? how can I buy the ticket to this Hagen Show? Do I need to buy in advance? Which hotel you stay?

Eric Lafforgue  Pro User  says:

hi!
first you have to buy quickly your domestic ticket from Port moresby to MH, cos the flights avre overbooked!
then you have to book very quick an hotel as there are few: Highland hotel is the best, even if it 's over over over expensive for the room they offer...
for the ticket you can buy it once you are in MH, no problem.
but if you do not have hotel and air ticket, i m afraid it's too late. MH is a small place...

Eric, thanks very much of your advice, I've booked the domestic ticket from Port Moresby to Mount Hagen Show , but still not able to book a hotel, there is a ecolodge which have room for us but have to take 45 mins transportation from the Showground to the lodge, I think it's too far, isnt it? Any photographic tips for us? I am afraid the black skin against the bright sky will make great contrast for shooting, what advise you suggest?
