The sad moon

On the table by the bed there was a tiny Christmas tree. The man in the bed next to it was pale and thin, his eyes large blue chips of the sky above his sharp cheekbones and the nose that used to tighten when he told a tall tale. The huge hands were soft now, soft and bloated with lack of use and lack of circulation. Where there used be calluses hard as horn, impossible skill and immense strength, there was soft skin, a weak and clumsy grip. Tears dripped in the bathroom, but by the bed there was nothing but gentleness. Quarter of an hour with each hand, slowly massaging the circulation back, the same with his feet, chatting about nothing, children, cats, the cold. His eyes were so large. And the sad, disapproving moon watched, as he was left alone in that large, clean room.
