Free, as in beer

WeatherGirl, Jess, and I ended our fine day Friday at the Tate Modern with dinner in their cafe. I was really intrigued by the beer list, and was particularly struck by "Free Beer" (which was in fact a few pounds, like the other beers). Surely this wasn't a reference to the GPL/Stallman "Free as in speech, not as in beer" line? Surely we don't have a beer in an art museum that's connecting to nerd culture in some cool way?
Oh, yeah, we do.
The recipe is released under a Creative Commons license at
freebeer.org . Breweries are welcome to commercialize it if they so desire, and the St. Austell brewery in Cornwall
sells it on-line , and through venues such as the Tate.
It was in fact a damn fine beer, and I look forward to having it again. I also kept the bottle, and hope to take more photos of it before we leave in late May.
Huzzah!

It was actually a really nice beer. Wonderfully smooth and with a
nice full flavor. I'm definitely looking
forward to having it again!

That is cool.
If it was Seattle nerd beer culture, it
would have to have a good hop flavor. You
were guessing caffeine weren't you!
Apparently, since Seattle is not far from
major hops producing areas, folks have
developed a taste for hoppy beers around
here. I'm not complaining.
I do see one problem: It sort of messes up
the phrase
"free as in free speech, not as in
free beer. "
"Free as in a free beer recipe, not as
in a free beer." just doesn't have the
same ring to it.
