Flickr Hive Mind
To take full advantage of Flickr, you should use a JavaScript-enabled browser and
install the latest version of the Macromedia Flash Player .
Sorry not to be posting recently, but I have been coding up a Flickr photo mining tool I hope you will like. There's lots to do yet, but I think it's ready for a beta test:
www.fiveprime.org/flickr_hvmnd.cgi
What can you do right now?
Search and display photos, with thumbnails up to 250x250, by Tags, Text, Username, Recentness, or Explore.
Retrieve up to 500 results at a time - little or no paging, as long as your computer can deal with it and flickr doesn't revoke my API keys.
Todo list:
a) No authentication yet, so this will only find public photos.
DONE
b) No searching of contacts or favorites yet.
COMPLETE
c) I want to add a license filter you can retrieve only photos that offer certain license terms.
COMPLETE
d) It will be easy to add intelligent reading of date formats people type in, but that's not there yet...
This tool is dedicated to
AnnuskA Hjärta and her Flickritis.
Also thanks to
Flickr Leech for inspiration.

You know, when I picked two photos off flickr
for inclusion in a book last year I did think
it was the world's biggest picture agency if
only someone made searching it quicker and
more easy, like just showing masses of
thumbnails at once... some
"amateur" stuff on here beats shots
we get from professional agencies into a
little woolly bobble hat for quality. Mind
you, out of work hours I suspect one could
spend ENTIRELY too much time on flickr with
this!

So how many tags brought up this selection of
50? I'm estimating about 35? Until now I
never saw the point of tags. Steam-age mind.

Ah, but the selection of 50 in the image was
by "Interestingness" (Explore), a
much more complex algorithm via social
networks (who looked at, who favorited, who
commented, etc).

No, it's not hard, only took about 12 hours
to do. If you are a nerd.
I'm mostly a manager of nerds right now,
but do things like this just to see if I
still have any skills ;)

Wow, very cool! Flickr-turbo-browsing! Now
I'm really not going to get any studying
done! I just read some interesting literature
on tagging and folksonomies in my indexing
class--I'm trying to figure out how to get
credit for playing around, I mean, doing
scholarly research, on Flickr. :)

24 March 2007: I've added one major new
feature - Authentication . Now after authentication you can see all
photos your flickr account is authorized to
see.
On a sadder note, I've turned off the size
500 image option to comply with flickr
guidelines. I think it's somewhat fair to
say that 250x250 images could still be
considered 'thumbnails', but 500x500 is
pushing it, and flickr wants no more than 32
real 'pictures' returned from any page.

Cool, and not at all nerdy. Well OK, quite
nerdy. Inspired me to make a new screen
saver collage... Let me know when you have
developed your own interestingness algorithm
with user configurable parameters ;-)

Actually, turning any set of photos returned
by the tool into a montage was in fact a request from Charles , and shouldn't be that hard except for
possible denial of service attacks.

Added: Filtering by creative commons license.
Now it is easy to find pictures that could
be used for public or even commercial
activities.

Today I realized that Flickr Leech don't
work. As I searched for an answer, I found
this tool.
I'm wondering why I have to log in, I can
see all my public photos without log in.
I also wondering about this:
Access to your photos (including private
photos)
I think all non public-photos.
How I can agree with this, I don't want
that anyone exept a few persons see this
photos.
Last year (Advent) I saw all my photos
including the non public-photos in explore.
How I can trust this system?
Apart of it, I like that this tool has more
functions. I just miss a link like
www.fiveprime.org/flickr_hvmnd.cgi/user/Musli
ma2006
My Pro-account is only for 3 month and I
want to have the option to see my photos with on klick .

Muslima2006:
Sorry, I just saw your note.
The security model is the same as Flickr
itself. Anyone, including folks who have not
logged in, can see public photos.
You are right, a simple:
www.fiveprime.org/flickr_hvmnd.cgi/user/Musli
ma2006
to get to your photos would be highly
desirable. This is on my todo list - there
is one obscure part of the current code that
is getting in my way.
