i liked it ok, but you're right, it was a little too melony, not nearly matcha-y enough.

For a very brief time Starbucks was making Green Tea Latte's in Flushing, NYC. They were decent, but kind of odd. I've made them on my own and was much happier with mine.

Have you tried one at 'Infuze Tea House' on Denman? They got my order wrong and gave me a 'hot' matcha instead of an iced one. It was 30 degrees outside! I let them know and all they did was water it down with ice cubes and water. It ended up being warm and tasteless. What a disappointment.

i've never been to the denman one, but i've been to the main branch across from the fairmont waterfront hotel. it's a lot bigger and with nicer designs. but that was couple months back and so i had the hot matcha milk. was okay, but then i always wonder what's the big fuss about them?!
the iced matcha from take 5 cafe is already pretty nice i think, from what i can find in the city. somehow i just like them a lot, great service and always friendly staff, at all their branches (^O^)

I think it has to do with all the advertising, at least that's what draws me in. :)
I've also tried the matcha frap. from Blenz and it was on the sweet side. The best one so far, I think, is from Renassiance Coffee. It tasted like a green tea ice-cream milkshake, yum.

I finally tried the Starbucks green tea frap today. Ohmygosh it's super sweet. I couldn't taste the green tea flavour at all. You're right, but I still wanted to try it... :P The barista told me that they use real matcha powder. Maybe she only put in 1.0 mg! I think I've been bitten by the green tea bug. :)

I vaguely recall seeing that picture. Starbucks has good advertising. Whenever I drive by Hastings and Willingdon I see this huge green tea frap. ad.
I tried the Seattle's Best green tea latte recently, not bad, but they make it from concentrate. :)

I've just given up on finding a good green tea latte at any chain place. There's got to be a little indie cafe in NYC that makes them, but I've yet to find one. Its ok, I make my own green tea lattes using my stove top espresso maker and Ikea milk frother :)

The matcha powder from Infuze is pretty good. They sell their products online. It's a little pricey though (~$30 CDN for 30 g). I make my own these days too.

rob, you should really try the infuze one agnes suggested! i went to their matcha matsuri today and it was sooo informative! infuze uses organic matcha that's certified by the highest european purity standards! amazing! and that's why it's a little pricey~ but it's worth it!
i know you're serious about your coffee cuz you said you buy blue mountain beans over the net~ and this is like premium matcha. if you'd like to know more tho, you could check out the infuze site listed above by agnes, or also check out www.matcha.co.jp. infuze has vertically integrated with that company, AIYA, the biggest matcha supplier who has their own plantations in japan.
and the matcha event was quite fun! agnes, have you ever met the owner at either the original cordova location or the new denman one? my friends told me before that there's a cute japanese manager, but i've never seen! and well, today i realized he's actually the owner! must be the guy they meant! cuz he's SO CUTE! and young!!! XD~
i was a little bit doubtful of infuze before in my comments saying that i didn't know what's the big fuss about them. cuz i find the hot matcha milk i tried there before was just okay. BUT, today i had their iced matcha smoothie, was SO GOOD!!! i'm definitely gonna try to hang around there more often now! (in hope of meeting the guy again *LOL*)
actually i love their original store, it's beautifully designed and has won awards. plus they are serious enough to hire a marketing company to brand themselves. so there, i did know why they're popular... it was just that i thought the product isn't as good as it's supposed to be. but well, now all that doubt is gone!!! THEY'RE GREAT! (^O^)v
and they'd be "great-er" if they offer matcha snacks in their stores too, which i did suggest to the owner today~ it was part of the reason why i rarely frequent their stores. cuz i love to have something to nibble on when i have tea/coffee! so i hope he'll really do what he said he would! bring on the matcha snacks soooooon! (^O^)

Cool, thanks to both of you for the links! Oh, Agnes, I'm sorry I didn't post a reply sooner re: Infuze. I looked at the link and thought I had written something up, but who knows. The past few weeks (especially the past week) have been more than insane. I'll say this-I've given a directive to all my friends that no more weddings are to be held within the next 12 months. That's it. Done. Too many this summer alone. But I digress.
I'm definitely all about the good coffee, though I haven't picked up any Blue Mountain at all recently. I would, but I fear one of my housemates would get her paws on it and I'd go from 2 pounds to 3 crumbs in a week.
I've also considered ordering tea online. A few years ago I got a catalog from a place called Den's tea which seemed like a great place to order from.
Still... having spent a ton of money on car repairs, tux rental, wedding gift, Burnout for XBox and PSP, and We Love Katamari.... I can't afford awesome coffee or tea.
For a few days at least.

Miss Peach: Did you say cute guy and the owner of Infuze? What a bonus! Did u get some pics? JJ Haha.. Good tea and cute guy, what more can you ask for? Haha...
Plaid Ninja: No worries, I just stumbled upon this conversation again. I didn't even realize that Miss Peach had replied to me until now. :)

i did try to take a pic when he was making the presentation... but you know how that is, he'd keep moving around so the pic didn't turn out nice :(
and i dunno if he's at the stores here often now... i think he flies back between japan, van, and san fran a lot these days, as heard from the presentation...
but yes, we should *definitely* hang around there more often just to increase the chances! wahahahaaa
and now everyone can take a look at the infuze matcha powder picture that agnes brilliantly took!!! (^O^)/

i tried the green tea frappe in the starbuck in Hong Kong. maybe it's different in the states, but the green tea flavour did come through quite a bit there. i really quite like it.

I think the Starbucks green tea frapp is overated. It tastes like cheap stuff made from McDonald's.
I read in a newspaper article that the green tea powder used in the Starbucks green tea frap was adjusted to be less strong for the North American market.
