Chris worked literally around-the-clock and weekends for the past 2 weeks or so to get this interactive map built for Yahoo! News. You can check it out for yourself in the upper right-hand corner of this page. It shows up-to-the-minute governor, Senate, and House election results by state, and it was a really helpful tool while watching the results come in last night.

SearchEngineWatch just published a post that said "In the Elections Results Race, Yahoo!'s the Winner," saying that Yahoo!s Election Day 2006 coverage was better than Google's, MSN's, and AOL's. They called out this interactive map in the post. Considering this is pretty much one of the only positive pieces of press I've seen about Yahoo! vis a vis Google in the past year (see The Drift post "The Swift-Boating of Yahoo!" for more info), I'd say it was a smashing success.

See, just as I pointed out two years ago in my blog post about the 2004 Presidential Elections as covered at Yahoo! there are benefits to having actual human journalists taking care to gather and present information, rather then computer algorithms choosing and presenting news -- especially about important, controversial, and complicated topics.

Well, there was this post in The Drift titled "The Swift-Boating of Yahoo!" which points out the fact that there is literally a noticeable trend in the media whereby "Google is the source of all things good in the digital world" and everything positive that Yahoo! builds or does is completely overlooked or spun negatively. 	Operators Are Standing By says: Wow - I was refreshing this all last night while I was studying. I had no idea Chris built it! The other two I was checking were CNN and NYT - I didn't like how CNN took you to a separate page for the state (although it gave more in depth analysis by geography/county of state) --I did like how the NYT showed where parties gained vs. kept seats. But I also thought Yahoo's was the least "busy" and easy for the average person (who's ahem trying to study propositional coding in linguistics in the other window) to keep tabs on things. I don't think any of us in the Yahoo! newsroom got a chance to look at any of the other sites in too much depth yesterday, so it's interesting to hear a real news-interested user's experience on all of those sites. 	fimoculous says: I actually did the MSNBC.com one discussed on that SearchEngineWatch link. We went with more of a "push" mentality (i.e., pushing events out to a stand-alone client -- no interaction necessarily required). But I really liked the Yahoo one a lot. I can't believe you guys started that project 8 days before the election! We are a nation of procrastinators for sure... How many people worked on the interactive map for MSNBC? I'm curious. As Jess knows, I've been pretty stressed about elections and it wasn't so much about the work, but the fact that the scope of the project was kind of in a contant flux. I started working on the actual results just over a week ago, but we were even doing the last-minute shuffle trying to decide how to represent important balances in the House and Senate as of Tuesday afternoon! Needless to say, it's done and the election aftermath will soon come to rest. All I can say is that the '08 interactive will be pretty badass, mofos...stay tuned! 2006 Midterm Elections: R.I.P.
