Hi Ron, great pic. Welcome to the pool!!
Are you entering into the competition again
this year??

Thanks for comment. I don't think I'll be
able to enter a photograph this year. I
recently bought a house, moved, and have a
young son who keeps me busy these days. I
believe the contest's deadline is quite close
as well. Perhaps next year...

Inspired by your win last year Ive decided to
enter this year. My kohai as well. Im not a
photographer or anything hell, ive almost no
equipment, but im going to print of a few
shots and send them in. My kohai here in
Osaka is also going to give it a go. If we
can make it a foreign win 2 years running it
will turn the competition into Sumo!!

Good luck in the photo contest! It has been
getting more difficult as they have been
receiving a larger number of entries each
year. If I remember correctly, last year they
had received 340 photos in total by the
deadline.
You don't necessarily need a lot of
expensive equipment to get a fantastic kendo
photograph. There are plenty of opportunities
happening in the dojo each day that would
make a wonderful image. However, tight action
shots, like the one I took above, are another
matter. Professional sports photographers
carry around those heavy Canon lenses for a
reason.
I really can't complain. The year before
last, the All Japan Kendo Federation sent me
to France for a week (as a representative of
Japan, nonetheless!) to demonstrate naginata,
all expenses paid. Then last year, I received
the 300,000 yen ($2,600 US) in prize money
from the AJKF for the first place win in
their photo contest. I can honestly say that
kendo has been good for me. The funny thing
is that I have never even practiced kendo.

Beautiful composition, depth of field and
focusing on this one. The lines created by
their shinai and body movements move the eyes
through the frame. Lovely tonality as well.
All in all this is definately a gorgeous
photograph. Well done.

Thank you all for your comments on my
photograph. It is always helpful to get
feedback, positive or negative, as I'm
usually too close to the subject matter to be
completely objective.
I'd like to personally thank
"sarky_coolbox" for taking the time
to write an in-depth comment. It is greatly
appreciated and longer comments are something
I think we need more of on Flickr. I'll be
sure to return the favor and write an lengthy
comment on one of your photos.
Daniel Motta - I agree with you that the
photo would like nice if it were cropped
wider to give it a film aspect. In the photo
above, the picture is almost exactly the same
as the scene that was recorded by the camera,
with only a little cropped off the top in
post processing. In order to get the maximum
picture quality out of my camera's sensor, I
usually shoot quite tight with long lenses
and try to do my cropping in camera.
Once again, thanks to everyone who left a
comment or marked my photo as one of their
favorites.

Very good shot. Your intentions of to a
close-up action shot is indeed full-filled.
Glad you had a 200mm or this could be a
dangerous shot :)
The intensity of the left person is very
well captured. I'm not sure that the lack of
flash is really a problem here - the left
person seems sharp enough, and the low DoF
and movement on the right side of the photo
isn't a problem at all. The title of the
photo puts an emphasis to it :)
A funny side note: I tried to copy the
photo to PS and flip it horizontally.
Actually i think it improved the photo a bit;
but i can't explain why (perhaps because i'm
right handed or something). Of course that
also puts his shinai into the left hand :(

plus: this is a great shot so my edits are only
small ones, i use to take Kendo, this photo
dose a amazing job of putting the viewer
right in the action as it really exists. this
feels almost like the view i had when i
fought.
minus: because its so real in putting you
"in" the action it feels a little
too tightly cropped in. in real life you
cant much other then then other guys sword
and him screaming in a photo i want to see
more.
still great :D

plus: ___The face has a sort of disciplined
disinterest which combines so well with the
obvious speed of the action to give a very
strong sense of Kendo - excellent choice of
speed for this shot.
minus: ___Perhaps the only item of regret is that
it couldn't have been shot from the right
hand side of the foreground combatant -
exposing more of the face - but such is
shooting action shots ! :-)
