Carter’s Beach & Cape Foulwind – First Encounter with West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island - One of Sam’s Exotic Travels |
After taking the ferry over in the morning, we drove to the Westport area on the West Coast that afternoon in time for sunset at Carter’s Beach and a visit to Cape Foulwind. Carter’s Beach is a small sandy beach a few kilometers south of Westport. The few flat stones added a nice backdrop for the first sunset on the South Island. When Captain Cook first visited the area in 1770, he named the cape “Cape Foulwind” due to the terrible weather – and the name has stuck. While it it noted for its seal colony and a trail that leads to an old lighthouse – it remained true to his name and I resigned myself to a quick view of the beach in the driving rain encountered after sunset.
